Part 1 - Ring Around the Rosie
The briefing was, well, brief, given the complicated situation they were being thrust into. Stacy tried to give them as much as she could but apparently her intel on this universe was rather limited.
For this reason, they were dumped rather unceremoniously on a vast planet, with grassy green fields, the dropship that dropped them off retreating on autopilot and disappearing back into the transdimensional ether. It was a lovely planet at the very least, with vast deep blue skies, teeming with vegetation, but oddly, they all would likely find themselves dealing with the unnerving inkling feeling that they were somehow being watched. There were no sentients or even animals in site, however.
The only thing they could do right now was wait. They had been told that they would be found, that they would be offered rings, taken into these different Corps of people, and they they needed to make sure the war ended in a way that didn't devastate life in this universe.
That was something of a tall order.

Lemme know if the post is okay?
It's perfect!
He had proposed, even, and though she was uncertain, she had said yes. But on their wedding day, he had realized that she was not yet ready to actually be wed. Her happiness had been what he had always wanted, though, and they had agreed to stay together as non-spouses. Still lovers and friends, simply not joined together in matrimony. And things had been good for a time. But then came the machinations of the demented artist Franco, a lure which had proven too much for Maxie. And that had been the crack that led to the eventual splitting of their union, once he had realized that keeping her by his side would only hurt her in the end.
So he had let her go, but he still loved her above all others. - madly, deeply, truly. He had been willing to lay down his life for her, thought perhaps it had been in truth before he had woken up here. And having her gone from her life had left an ache, a hole that he thought would never be filled again.
He would have said yes, anyway, but this...this made so much more sense. To keep that strong so people could form the bonds that made up a family, raising wee ones together, growing old together. Love is what matters. His jaw tightened, a determination that was rarely glimpsed spreading across his features, and he stood taller. Sure of himself in this answer above all others. "Yes. Yes, I will."

He would feel love fill him up until it felt like he was brimming over with it.

A piece from a sonnet by John Barlas went through his head, quite unbidden, and he wound up murmuring it out loud. "Yes, I am now become Love's pantheist; In him and by him men, his shows, subsist."
It seemed to fit, to him, and a wide smile broke out on his face, stretching nearly ear to ear. He was happy, in way he hadn't truly been for some time, and more than ready to face the task set before him. The smile still lingering, he turned to look for Carol, his emotions bubbling over and making him seem a bit like an eager, overgrown puppy.
"The Jackal is ready. What is our next task to be, oh most beauteous one?"

She even glowed a little bit more brightly.
Literally.
"We train. We let you get used to your powers. And then we fight." With love!
