Boredom in Hydroponics

Work, work, work. It was always work with Hank who could not stop for just a minute to take his mind off his lab creatures. Some boyfriend he was. Janet rolled her eyes for the umpteen time in the apartment they shared and flew out of the door, her wings taking her aimlessly through the ship.

She managed to stumble into Hydroponics, again. The quiet surroundings may have calmed her mind but she was now very bored. "Argh, I'm so bored!" Janet exclaimed as she grew back to her normal size, swiping a flower along the way to look at the petals, hoping that the floral detail would catch her eye.

((OOC: Jan shrinks to about 10cm (4") in her wasp form and is 163cm (5'4") when she's in her normal human size.)

"Hey there!"

Morgan offered a smile and a wave as he approached, having only just noticed her as she popped back to actual human size. He'd been on his way back from checking out Applejack's trees, but he certainly didn't mind stopping to say hello.

Jan looked over and gave back a small smile. "Oh hey, Morgan. What brings you to Hydroponics?"

"I'm up here a lot," he said, jerking a thumb over his shoulder to indicate where he'd come from. "My friend Applejack has a barn up here and some crops, I come up to say hi, see how they're doing. And apparently cute girls show up here, so that's cool too. What brings you this way?"

"Crops? I never knew someone was growing food up here. This is interesting." Jan replied and attempted to look around to see where this farm was. She decided to shrink and begun to fly upwards to have a better view.

"Ah, so there it is." Wasp flew back down and addressed his second question. "Well, I was bored since Hank was busy with his experiments."

"Hank?" he asked, with a little of that particular "well, crap" tone of voice that comes when a girl mentions a name in that sort of fashion. Not too much, though; he'd come to understand that the ship had an undercurrent of attraction and tension that was to be expected, given the circumstances.

"He's my boyfriend from my world where he's a scientist. Hank gets super excited about knowledge and discoveries." Jan replied nonchalantly as she flew in the direction of this "Applejack" barn.

"Applejack sounds like a cowboy of some sort."

"Boyfriend? Damn," he said, a little disappointed but more amused. "Applejack's a pony, actually. Though she DOES have a cowboy hat."

Jan raised an eyebrow at his tone of voice. "You were interested in me?" She asked, a little bewildered.

"Wait what, a pony? Are you joking? Like the mini horses that are at carnivals?" This was such an awkward moment.

"Is that surprising?" He raised an eyebrow, an amused half-smile on his face. "You're cute and you seem interesting, why shouldn't I have been? But I'm not a poacher, so you're safe now," he added with a wink.

"And yes, Applejack is that kind of pony, but sentient and articulate. I forget she's one half the time. She's good people."

Jan laughed nervously. "Well, if things go wrong with Hank, at least I know where to look to next." She joked with a hand behind her head.

"I've met elves and fairies. I guess a talking pony isn't much of a stretch."

She flew towards the barn and saw what looked like apple trees surrounding it. "Interesting. Are they edible?"

"Sure, put me on the waiting list," he said with a laugh, as he followed her, hands behind his back. He envied the casual ease with which she flew; that looked like fun.

"The apples? Oh yes. We're going to make cider out of them, as soon as I can finagle a cider press out of one of my friends. Or SOME sort of juicer anyway."

"Isn't there a tavern in town? They may have the equipment for juicing."

Jan flew straight up to an apple, admiring her reflection on its surface. "May I pick a couple?"

"They seem just a little more focused on alcoholic drinks. So if I was trying to distill something, maybe..."

Was she using an apple as a mirror? That was kind of cool, and cutely vain, all at the same time. "I don't think AJ would mind, so long as you keep it to a couple."

"Maybe you could take some equipment to Engineering to ask them to modify it into a juicer?"

Jan then used her stingers to cut two apples from the tree. Before it touched the ground, she flew down quickly and returned to her normal human form, catching both apples in her hands. "Perfect. I think Hank would appreciate it."

Despite being annoyed with her boyfriend, she always thought about him.

Aww, that was kind of cute. Not that he was going to feel guilty for a damn second, mind. "Applejack knows what we need, and my friend Stephen can almost certainly build it. We just have to find time to get them all on the same page."

Huh. Now a thought occurred to him. "So if you shrink while holding those apples, will they shrink with you or not?"

She shook her head. "No, they'll just fall on top of me. Shrinking just works only for me."

Janet casually tossed an apple in the air, catching it with her hand repeatedly, thinking about the most frequently used quote about apples and doctors.

"I guess that makes sense... inasamuch as things like that ever make sense," he admitted with a shrug and a grin. "Out of curiosity, can you do all that stuff naturally, or is there a key to it?"

Janet furrowed her eyebrows. Good question, how was she going to answer it without compromising Hank's work? "Yes, they are natural. My boyfriend discovered how I could do so and now he can shrink too. It's quite cool."

"Stingers too, huh? That is pretty cool." Privately he wondered if her boyfriend was some equivalent to a Son of Ether or the like. "I guess he found a way to make the uniform an exception to the not-shrinking-objects rule, hmm?"

"Yes, he did. He practically experiments on all sorts of stuff." Janet replied, now missing his lab just a bit. How strange when a moment ago, she was all ready to get out of the dreary lab and now, she wanted to return to it.

"I think Hank might be feeling a little peckish now, I'll bring these apples back for our snack. Thanks for showing me around the barn!"

"My pleasure. Any time! I'll see if I can shortlist you two for some cider!" he said.
