Strangely enough, even after the events of the past few days, Zouichi had not developed an aversion to the ocean. Or axes! Or giant squid! It helped that he, unlike some of the other crew, hadn't been in imminent danger of drowning. He was, however, busying himself with preparing some of the food they'd bought on shore leave, as well as supplies salvaged from the Deepstar 7. No sense letting it go to waste, right?

He'd started work in the early morning, and gotten so absorbed in what he was doing that he didn't quite notice that he was making more than was absolutely necessary. What? Cooking was relaxing. And anyway, he thought as he waited to pull a piece of battered shrimp out of its cooking oil, someone would probably eat it all. For the people living in the inn, he was careful to set aside boxes of prepared food. But there was an increasing amount left over...

Stop by, enjoy your ridiculously overprepared lunch. Or just a simple one, if you're an acquaintance. The front door's open!

Kais preferred to try it without the sauce first. Taking a bite, he made a face while chewing it. No telling if it was a good face or a bad face yet.

"It is treating me the way a ship would treat anyone else."

"It's an expression. Basically, 'how are you?' You seemed a little lost when you first got here."

"Why not say that then?"

Human colloquialisms go right over his head. At least he took another bite of the shrimp.

"Probably because there are different levels of familiarity with which humans speak to each other. For example, colloquialisms are generally used to speak to those with whom one is more at ease. More formal speech is reserved for situations requiring more decorum."

He picked up another piece of shrimp. "Besides, I think they get bored and think up new ways to say things."

"Wouldn't that make things more difficult?"

Sounds like another reason to join the Greater Good and why humans were definitely swarming to the cause (propaganda).

"There's a lot about language that's difficult. But that's just what happens when it's used by so many people. It goes through changes, mutations. But it doesn't mean learning isn't worthwhile."

Zouichi didn't even know what the Greater Good was, to be honest.

"Why not attempt to learn a new language like T'au?"

A shame, Zouichi, a shame. The Ethereals would not be pleased.

"Why don't the T'au learn other languages?" They weren't one of those assholes, were they? 'Speak T'au'?

"We do." He took another bite of the shrimp.

"I can speak human, kroot, and very little eldar. I am limited to these languages due to biological differences."

"In that case, I'm sure you can understand that literal meaning and true meaning don't always coincide."

After all, the Eldar didn't always say exactly what they meant.

Zouichi shrugged in reply; The T'au seemed peculiar to him, and apparently the feeling was mutual. "How's the food?"
