Far below the rolling tide [Open]
Strangely enough, even after the events of the past few days, Zouichi had not developed an aversion to the ocean. Or axes! Or giant squid! It helped that he, unlike some of the other crew, hadn't been in imminent danger of drowning. He was, however, busying himself with preparing some of the food they'd bought on shore leave, as well as supplies salvaged from the Deepstar 7. No sense letting it go to waste, right?
He'd started work in the early morning, and gotten so absorbed in what he was doing that he didn't quite notice that he was making more than was absolutely necessary. What? Cooking was relaxing. And anyway, he thought as he waited to pull a piece of battered shrimp out of its cooking oil, someone would probably eat it all. For the people living in the inn, he was careful to set aside boxes of prepared food. But there was an increasing amount left over...
Stop by, enjoy your ridiculously overprepared lunch. Or just a simple one, if you're an acquaintance. The front door's open!

"Are you going to adopt this guy, too?" He was a little surprised at how much Howard had taken to cats, honestly -- when they'd first met, Howard hadn't really seemed the sort of person who would willingly accept responsibility for another. Although it didn't escape him that this cat was also apparently going to be named after food. But at least he hadn't been dubbed MRE or something.
no subject
"I think so. Someone has to take care of him and he seems to get along good with Emergency Rations." He places the tubby cat on the floor. Both cats pretty immediately set to begging at Zouichi's feet. Howard grabs his plate and takes a seat, ignoring the way the kitties' eyes trail after the food.
Hey, give him credit, Zou. He took responsibility for Orc for over a year. Granted, 'took responsibility' largely meant keeping Orc drunk and then flipping out when the guy rampaged and killed someone, but the intent was there!
"Besides, avoiding them both will give Alan exercise."
no subject
Yes... about that keeping Orc drunk thing. That did not sound like responsible caretaking. He gave Howard a look. "Well, he looks like he's adjusting pretty well. How about you? Doing alright?"
He returned to the stove, flipping some dumplings as they reached a nice brown color on one side. Don't ask him what he was going to do with all of these.
no subject
"Usual. Same as after every mission. Got to spend at least three days feeling glad to be alive. You?"
Howard's going to do just that. "So what are you going to do with all those brown things?"
no subject
"I'm all right; I wasn't really in as much danger as the rest of you. But... while we encounter hostile aliens and danger all the time here, I think it was the first time I ever really thought about how dangerous the ocean could be." He began removing the dumplings onto another plate, using paper towels to dab away at the excess oil. "This ship is so large it's hard not to think of it as a planet, rather than as a pocket of atmosphere in the vacuum of space." A pocket that could be ruptured, killing (almost) everyone inside! Exciting.
"They're gyoza. And I'm going to give some to you." With that, Zouichi set a plate of freshly pan-fried dumplings beside Howard before returning to the burners.

"Kind of different from that time when we went to the beach, right? Suddenly octopuses aren't so cute and pokable once they're trying to eat our submarine." Octopi, squid, same difference. "You mean you wouldn't even get squished under all the water pressure?"
Howard takes the gyoza with an expression akin to glee. "Thanks. And what about the rest? Trick or treating with...however you say these?"
no subject
"Gyoza. I think I'll cook some, and freeze the rest. That way they'll last for a while." He glanced back down at the cats. "Did you find any cat carriers in the City?"
no subject
"Sounds like a plan." Howard puts two of the gyoza in his mouth. After he's finished chewing and swallowing he shoos the cats away from each other and gathers Emergency Rations onto his lap. "Dude, I made cat carriers after that whole robot fiasco. They even fit on my bike so I can carry both while on the move. Why, you need one for Alan?"
no subject
Favoritism, Howard? Or maybe Sushi didn't like laps, anyway. "I'm wondering if it wouldn't help to introduce them a little more... slowly. They seem a little on edge."
no subject
Hey, he was just carrying Sushi around! He's just trying to be fair. "That's because there's food around. It brings out the worst in them. I swear they were snuggling a few minutes ago."
no subject
He gave the two cats a dubious look. "If you say so. I don't want to break up any fights." Honestly, why were Howard's pets so... cantankerous? They should be cute and friendly! Like Alan! Alan got along with everyone.
no subject
Howard buries his face in Emergency Rations belly for a moment, then pulls up enough to stuff another dumpling in his mouth. "Just spritz them with water if they get cranky."
no subject
"...Maybe I'll check out some cat behavior books from the Media Library."
no subject
The first rule of Clingy Behavior: don't talk about Clingy Behavior.
"Why, do you think there's something wrong with them?"
no subject
"All right, I guess an excursion or two couldn't hurt. And I don't really know enough about cats to tell you, but I'd rather they didn't fight every time they were fed."
no subject
"It's just growling. I mean, they haven't even got the claws out yet." The cat tries to squirm out of his arms to get the food on the table. Howard blocks her. "But if we're going to take bets, Emergency Rations could totally kick Sushi's ass any day of the week."
no subject
In some way, it's like... Emergency Rations has absorbed some of Howard into herself. It's true. Pets do resemble their owners. "Yeah, I'd say you're probably right. Maybe he should hire an armed guard."
He sighed, then sat down at the counter. "I wonder how long this is going to go on."
no subject
Howard angles his head. "How long what is going to go on? The cats fighting?"
no subject
You know. The depressing thing that hangs over everyone's head all the time.
no subject
He pauses. "Not that that might be long if there's more killer robots hidden up in Stacy."
no subject
"Well, how many killer robot armies can it have? Most people I know only have one."
no subject
"Well, it is the size of a moon. How many killer robot armies can you fit on the moon?" Depends on the size of the robots, he guesses. "Besides, she has Reavers and Nightmare Kings and other crap too. Doesn't have to be robots."
no subject
Does he sound cynical? He's feeling a little cynical.
no subject
Maybe it's just one crazy, stupid mission for a ship that manipulates them too many.
"Do you want to hug a cat?" Howard offers.
no subject
...he was looking forward to seeing Ildraniath again, though.
Zouichi blinked, then looked at the cat in Howard's arms. "Don't they dislike that?"
