Sobek the Immortal [Closed]

Planet Designation: Kalimba Status: Terrestrial, H-class.
Non-sentient life: Extensive flora and fauna.
Semi-Sentient Life: Unknown
Sentient Life: Ruins and step pyramids suggest the presence of intelligent life at some point. Currently: Unknown.
Water: 70.2% of the planet's surface. Heavy rainfall/monsoons.
Climate: Earth-like.
Landscape: Primarily jungle and swamp, some plains, severe arctic conditions in northern and southern poles.
Air: Type I (breathable)
Sky: Blue-green.
Warnings: Medium to high levels of megafauna. Watch your step. Conditions in the atmosphere make several forms of orbital scans and equipment unreliable.
Mission: Archaeological investigation of step pyramids and ruins, investigate for signs of source of abnormal energy signature in target area.

The first thing the group would notice was that Kalimba's air was humid and heavy, with a light breeze. The morning had long since burned off most of the mist, and in the distance, clouds lazily drifted onwards towards the horizon. The typhoon season was a long ways off.

The undergrowth was tangled and dense, seemingly impassable in places. Vibrant flowers and vines took up residence where some of the tree cover faltered. With limited sunlight available, it was every plant for themselves. Disturbed by the archaeology group, "birds", each easily half the size of a person and more salamander than avian suddenly took to the air in a flash of brilliantly colored wings. They were gone almost instantly, slicing through the air and leaving only the ear-splitting shriek behind.

The hill sloped down. The cover of trees broke as they came out onto the stone remains of path that must have once been heavily used. Now, just like everywhere else, massive roots and tanglers tore at the ground, slowly swallowing any signs of civilization back within itself. There were trees of all shapes and sizes as far as the eye could see, a rolling wave of jungle and rainforest. Tan and dirty gray step pyramids, all more massive than those found on Earth, and the occasional obelisk rose through the canopy cover like claws, dotting the landscape.

Stac's scans indicated much of the planet was covered in these structures, with the largest in this location. Aside from the archaeological mission, her scans also indicated the presence of an abnormal power that may be of interest.

The Doctor didn't mind a good tromp through a bug-infested, possibly crocodile-infested swamp. Forest. Swampy forest.

He did mind when it was labeled an "Archaeological Dig" (typical archaeologist) and there was probably something about proper names and a bunch of boring numbers that he didn't bother to pay attention to when Daniel was going over the briefing one more time on the transport down. Captain Eneesh, he noticed, had been paying the human her full undivided attention, the bug leaning forward and going still with those feelers of hers pointed in his direction, almost close enough to touch his hat. Actually, he was sure he'd seen one feeler dip close enough to stroke it, almost longingly. She loved this, the Doctor thought. Probably wished she was an archeologist in another life. For now she was quite happy to set her crew to securing a camp for them.

The Doctor twisted and untwisted his hands together as he glanced at the ruins stretching up over the canopy and then at that human he was partnered with. Vala. The one he'd met briefly back on shore-leave, right before the tumble into that ravine and that...business with the Master. She looked like she could outrun a crocodile, and he didn't mean that to be polite. Valuable skill, outrunning crocodiles! She might even give him some tips. It's loads more relevant than numbering and cataloging and numbering some more if digging holes all over the place wasn't enough for you.

The Doctor counted himself lucky he hadn't been partnered up with Daniel or Captain Eneesh. They'd only be irritatingly efficient at their jobs.

For now he sized up the archway they were about to duck under, the sonic screwdriver in his hand as he waited for Vala to finish climbing down the steps after him. Deep dark tunnel leading into who knew where, moisture dripping in the distance. All in all, normal, if not humid. After Stacy, he's used to humid, the Doctor reaching up to wipe a bead of sweat before it could trickle down his cheek.

"I do love a tunnel," the Doctor said, half to hear himself speak, half to get a conversation going with his new human. "Best things are in tunnels, you know."

[Eleven and Vala]

Under normal circumstances Vala would probably still be sulking about not being partnered with Daniel. Except she'd spent more than enough time recently far too close for comfort to be craving his company at all. It was a relief to have her thoughts back to herself and not have to curb them or shield them from him. It couldn't have been timed better frankly, as with that had come the freedom to zone out completely from what he was saying on the way down to the planet. Save for a few key instructions that she supposed might be relevant. She was highly adept at tuning in to the important bits, it had taken two years of practice. Highly adept in that Daniel preceded most of what she absolutely needed to hear with a pointed Vala or he at least made sure they had eye contact to ensure she was paying attention. It hadn't helped that that bug had been hanging on to his every word like a lovesick puppy. Vala had decided right there and then that she didn't like Captain Eneesh very much.

But nope. She'd got the guy with the inordinately large chin, eyes that seemed too small for his face and a jacket that looked like he'd managed to shrink it in the wash. Wasn't he hot wearing all that? Vala only had a vest on and her leather pants and she was feeling the humidity, but he was buttoned up to his neck and then had a fabric bow tied there for some reason. He was also the man who had introduced himself as 'The Doctor' for some absurdly egotistical reason. That whole business with him being a 'Lord of Time' according to the Time Dragon was very curious though, even if she didn't like self inflated titles. Anything with 'Lord' in it smacked of System Lords to Vala, generally not a nice bunch. But he's seemed amiable enough from what she'd seen. Whether he proved to be useful was another matter entirely.

"Generally, I find the best things are at the end of tunnels actually. Not to be deliberately contrary." Vala piped up from behind The Doctor, shining her torch inside to see if she could see anything in its depths. "Either the exit to an escape route or a secret cavern where..."

Oh now there was a thought! Abandoned pyramids in Vala's world meant one thing. Possible forgotten or hidden treasure. "I should lead." She announced suddenly, sidestepping around him to slide in front. If anyone was discovering treasure it was her. "I'm a tunnel expert!"

[Eva and Daniel]

[identity profile] vissernone.livejournal.com 2011-12-15 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Eva spends the preparation part of the mission knowing she's being watched. Not by Eneesh and her crew, who have no special interest in her besides as another part of the mission team, but by Daniel. The idea rankles her. She tries to remember that he has a perfectly good reason to be watching her, and that pushes her from oscillating between irritable and melancholy to a good old-fashioned cranky.

Well, that and the fact that she's been chasing imaginary cake for a few weeks.

And to make it all worse, whatever ancient race they're studying didn't have the forethought to make this interesting for her. The architecture is certainly impressive (although Eva is reluctant to admit that anything could make her more awestruck than Machu Picchu), but that's never been the part that's interested her most about cultures. And given that she doesn't speak whatever native tongue there might be here, much less read it, she's already finding herself scrabbling to feeling interested in something in greater depth than 'oh, pretty crocodile statue, I wonder if I can fit in its mouth'.

Stacy should dump her in an Earth library if she wants Eva to have a good time.

She's going to have to rely on Daniel or the Doctor to be any use for this mission, and she hates having to lean on others. She'd rather stay with the Doctor, if only because he doesn't treat her like a) a time bomb primed and ticking or b) a Very Very Bad Girl who needs to sit in the corner with her hands tied and a stupid hat on. Unfortunately, the Doctor and Vala seem to have wandered off, and the way Daniel's looking at her tells her that he's already fixed an imaginary leash around her neck. Not that he shouldn't, and that's what she hates most about it. She earned this treatment with her bare hand.

She walks over and stands next to Daniel, in the shadow of the decoration of a crocodile he's been looking at. Strange, that a place so far removed from earth should have similar wildlife. She adopts an air of being totally casual, two acquaintances admiring the native artwork rather than two whatever-they-ares.

"You should moonlight as a jail warden," she says, cracking that facade. "So what do you think of the art? I'm trying to remember if the Yeerk trade ships ever mentioned exporting crocodiles to far-off planets, but I can't seem to figure out how they got here. Maybe it's just some type of cosmic coincidence that they look the same."

If the Doctor was hot, he most certainly wasn't going to show it. Where would he even leave his jacket? With Captain Eneesh?

Exactly. He'd almost lost it with Analog and her princessi: after that, he'd become rather...possessive of it.

The Doctor sucked in a breath to let Vala squeeze past. "Please tell me you're not another archeologist." He said it with an almost long-suffering sigh. Two of them was bad enough already, but the was the way Vala talked made her sound more like the adventuring sort and not the digging holes and sticking numbers on things sort. In other words: promising. Even if he didn't get that feeling she was as good at Otter Soothing as Daniel.

The tunnel dipped into the ground at an angle that only steepened. A few times it branched off into more darkness, the moisture down here becoming even more noticeable, thick clods of wet dirty brushing against the top of their heads. Odd little smell! It didn't smell entirely organic. The Doctor sniffed as he lagged behind Vala, poking at a root sticking out from the tunnel's ceiling and then eyed the quite frankly alarmingly big beetle hunkering against it. It flickered a bright green at him, just as surprised to be ogled. Right, yes: moving on! Like Vala said, sometimes you could use a secret cavern to make things interesting and he never could resist poking around at things, especially if they were new. New planet! New traveling companion! Traveling assistant? Bit early to say "traveling friend", considering he'd had only a grand total of one and a half conversations with the human here.

The Doctor had to take several long strides to catch up to Vala, her torch's light bobbing ahead of him.

"There was an energy spike further down," the Doctor's voice seemed almost disembodied in the darkness, heavy like a living thing. "Might be some sort of generator or engine."

He hoped Vala was better at jiggery-pokery than Jamie. As much as he liked his Scot, Jamie was rather...well, abymsal at it, and he was being polite. There was tinkering and then there was proper jiggery-pokery and Jamie simply hadn't gotten the hang of it. Hopefully Vala might have more practice.

"Do you think this could be some Earth its universe forgot? I know the planet isn't entirely similar, but natural disasters and interruptions from space happen. Just ask the dinosaurs." She grimaces a little at the mural. Her interpretation, right or not, is of sacrificing the man being devoured so the others may cross in safety. It's an idea she agrees with, but not one that makes her comfortable. She doesn't like to be reminded of how disposable individual humans are.

The grimace morphs into a bit of a scowls, a twitch that drags the corner of her mouth down towards her jawline, when Daniel bosses her around, although she doesn't argue with him. She supposes she should try and watch what he does, do as he does. She isn't too old to learn, she just doesn't find this particular set of ruins especially captivating. She doesn't know enough about archaeology to look at what would make them fascinating.

She turns the corner to investigate the rooms and concludes that the one that lays before her must be some sort of prayer room, similar to mosques. There are still dried, rotted remains of mats on the floors, lined up equidistant from each other, and unless the race here was really into recreational yoga Eva can't think of another reason for it. The room itself is more luxurious than the one before it, a tomb raider's dream. The blocks are smoother cut, the eyes, teeth and nostrils of the statues plated in some sort of reflective golden metal to make the crocodiles look endlessly ravenous and intelligent.

"First one. Let's hope I get some beginner's luck. I've heard horror stories about the missions here." By some instinct she doesn't touch anything - this feels less like living history to her than it does a museum. "Have you made any educated guesses about the religious leanings of this people?"

"Well seeing as how you said please. I'm not an Archeologist." Well that made things clear for The Doctor. Vala tilted her head and gave him a cute teasing smile. They were face to face at that point, just as she was passing him, her back unavoidably brushing against the wall behind her.

"Ugh! What was that?" The walls of the tunnel were thick with wet moss as their descent angle steepened. Wet moss that had just brushed against the naked skin on her shoulders and made her shiver at the unwelcome and slightly slimy contact. "I swear if I didn't know better, Daniel gave me this job deliberately." Vala grumbled, arching her shoulder blades and back away from the slick wall with a grimace. "No forget that. I do know better and it probably is deliberate."

Priorities were in order, Vala plonked down her backpack on the floor and proceeded to root through for a hair band. She wasn't getting that gunk in her hair. She only owned two since being on Stacy and never had she been forced to be quite so possessive over a couple of simple elastic bands, so they were in here somewhere.

"So how useful is your green light stick thing, exactly?" Vala asked idly as she began the futile search in the dark aided only by one measly torch. She hoped it could read the energy signature, because they were pretty screwed if it couldn't. She didn't see any kind of digital display though like the equipment Sam usually used, and Stacy had seen fit to equip with them barely anything.

Re: [Eva and Daniel]

"Fair enough. In comic books there was an alternate universe where the only difference was that they were all lizards instead of humans." And of course, knowing Stacy's propensity for proving media to be actual realities, there probably is a lizard-based alternate universe out there somewhere. Eva's a little bit embarrassed that she's read such silly comic books, but Marvel and DC and Brenda Starr were how she learned how to speak English, and she supposes that she should be proud of that.

Even if she thought "whammo!" was a word for two years.

"...but powerful," she fills in for Daniel, staring into the reflective eyes of the crocodile. Like the inside of a spoon, the concave surface flips her reflection upside down, dark hair dangling upwards and the curious pout reversed into a puffy close-mouthed smile. "A powerful god who probably, when on their side, could allow them to overtake any of their enemies, or at least defend themselves. They had enemies, I would wager. Or hard seasons where a lot of them died."

She turns back around and startles. "Daniel?"

"Doctor! Doctor! Och, he's gone." Jamie glanced around the area where he was supposed to meet up with his partner with a frown. He had assumed he'd be paired up with the Doctor, but the Time Lord wasn't here. He must have left with someone else, then. And most of the others seemed to have gone as well, which left him wondering what, exactly, he was supposed to do now.

It looked like his options were to either wait here and see if there were any more stragglers he could team up with, or go back and ask Captain Eneesh if she could spare one of her crew to go with him while he explored the area. He could go it alone, he supposed, but having someone at his back would be preferable, given the size of those bird-lizard flying beasties that he had seen when they first got here.

With a sigh, he started to look around again, but a glint of light caught his attention, reflecting off the holographic tracking bracelet Captain Eneesh had given him the last time he had seen her. He had forgotten he had put that on before they came down here, actually, and while part of him could have kicked himself for that, the rest of him was just grateful it was there. Carefully, he pressed the controls to activate it - it was a pretty fragile device, and he didn't want to risk breaking it. A little adjustment and a series of small dots popped up - a group at the camp where Captain Eneesh and her crew were, two dots in one of the step pyramids, two dots in the other, a dot for Jamie and one left over.

So there was someone else around he could team up with. The question was, who was it?

((Note: for tracking purposes, assume this is bendytimed so as not to conflict with current ship-wide plot.))

"Right bottom pocket, take a left and another left at the big lintball." The Doctor didn't miss a beat, casting an almost cursory glance down at her open backpack. He held up the sonic. "Sonic screwdriver, although green light stick thingie has a certain ring to it! It's very useful. The very definition of useful."

Go ahead, Vala. Look it up. It was all fact, really. Right there in full color. He'd offer you a dictionary from his trousers, but the 51st Century Abridged one wouldn't fit in his less-than-optimal pockets. They weren't quite as super as Jamie's super sporran, so he trusted Vala to have a look when they were closer to some proper books and not adventuring underground like this. Libraries didn't tend to do very well in moist underground tunnels. The Doctor waited for Vala to finish fishing around, getting dangerously close to tapping his foot behind her. Really! All sorts of ruins he'd never been to waiting to be explored and she had to waste time doing that. Humans sometimes! Not to mention that he was still a bit red in the face from Vala pressing herself against him, the Doctor suddenly interested in his sonic all over again, the tips of his ears still bright red.

As for Daniel, well. He'd say that your options were very limited in terms of traveling companions and unless she cared to follow the human around while he was incessantly cataloging everything, there were far worse people to adventure around with.

"There might be an access shaft around here," the Doctor snapped open the sonic, peering at it and then at Vala. "We're getting much closer than before."

The Master was beginning to suspect that he was getting grouped with the Doctor for Stacy's missions on purpose. That stinking, rotting, bitch of a ship probably thought it was a good idea for the Doctor to keep an eye on him. Or perhaps she just thought it was funny.

Or-- and this was the worst thought of all-- perhaps the Doctor was specifically requesting it. It seemed just the sort of thing he would do, and though on the highly awkward shuttle ride over the other Time Lord had shown no signs, the Master was sure that he was internally gloating. As soon as they'd landed he'd managed to slip off on his own while the rest of the party unloaded their equipment.

If it hadn't been for the mysterious power signature on the planet, he'd have shirked the mission entirely.

The Master pressed a shot of Anetrizine to his neck and glanced around the landing area, shoulders relaxing as the tension rapidly dissipated. No sign of the Doctor, which of course meant little. What there was was a certain young Scotsman with a tendency toward gullibility, looking around in vain and calling for his Doctor like a lost lamb. A young Scotsman he'd had the dubious honor of saving from a Dalek. The Master smiled and began to stroll in his direction. This could end up being fun after all.

"Well, if it isn't my good pal Jamie," he called in lazy greeting. "Keeping out of trouble?"

Vala followed the 'directions' without thinking for a second, grateful for the assistance. "Thanks."

...wait. How could he know that? Vala eyed him suspiciously as she piled all her hair up into a scruffy top knot to secure it (and she had a lot of hair). She hadn't left her pack unattended at any point, and as an accomplished thief herself you tend to be aware of other bag riflers or similar shenanigans.

"So what can I crayon that up to?" She has problems with Earth idioms Doctor. Get used to it because she'll still insist on trying them out as often as possible, no matter how many times she's corrected or ignored. She has a bit of a thing for anything 'Earth', they probably have more in common than one would think. Vala finished with her hair and shone her torch directly in the Doctor's face, scrutinising him through narrowed eyes for a moment. The Doctor just got more and more interesting. As well as his handy sonic screwdriver too, by the looks of things. If she could just get her hands on it, she'd have it worked out in no time. Alien technology was one of her fortes after all, a legacy that Qetesh had left her with that she was actually happy about. It did nothing to make up for the rest of it however.

Vala's torch searched the tunnel for anything that looked remotely like an opening or hatch when he suggested it, the sooner they were out of this dingy hot hole the better. "And who knows what we'll find if there is!" There was an element of glee in her voice, she was hoping they were about to get their hands on something worthwhile. Vala liked to think she had an instinct for these things. The next part of the tunnel took a steep drop right after the buttress roots that half blocked their path. Peering over the edge, there was an eight foot drop of broken stone and roots to navigate. In amongst the twisted thick roots were the remains of what Vala assumed were once stone steps. Looks like the centuries of growth had completely destroyed them, leaving the Doctor and Vala to manage the precarious descent without them.

"Time to get really dirty I guess. It can only be a blessing that my manicure fell into a state of disrepair two months ago. I hope your boots have got a good grip, because I'm not catching you if you slip."

Re: [Eva and Daniel]

Eva raises her eyebrows at Daniel, then politely covers her laugh to stifle a completely mature giggle. In a way she's reminded of why Daniel endeared himself to her in the first place (besides that he was calm and patient with her while she flailed about in a completely indecorous and weepy fashion in the library) - Daniel probably didn't even bother to check the crack for danger much behind her back. He isn't the type to delegate discovering to other people.

"Alright." Twisting her way through the crack isn't easy on her - aside from the way her hair gets caught on a jutting edge of stone, she feels her shoulder pop a little as she contorts. The shooting pain isn't enough to stop her any, but she does grunt and rub her old war wound once she's extracted herself and sidled up next to Daniel. "This is..."

She surveys the room, smiles a bit and then decides that she may as well admit it. "This is impressive. A throne room, maybe?"

Oh, it's him. "Oh. It's you," he replied - and while it wasn't as icy a greeting as it would be coming from someone like Martha, his tone was still quite flat and his mouth pulled off to one side in a less-than-thrilled sort of way.

Granted, there had been that rescue, but part of Jamie (the really overconfident part that wasn't aware how the Daleks had improved over time) still believed he could have figured out some way out of the situation. And, in his opinion, it still didn't make up for the fact that the Master had nearly gone and gotten a lot of them killed with that mess in the TARDIS - including Victoria. And that, more than anything, Jamie isn't going to forgive easily.

"If you're looking for the Doctor, he's gone already," he points out, unnecessarily. "So has everyone else, so you're on your own."

Maybe he'd decide that he'd want to go off and have a look by himself and Jamie could go back to his plan of asking Captain Eneesh to spare one of the extra crew - after, of course, he made sure the Master was well away.

Crayon? The Doctor frowned at Vala, mouthing crayon? to himself silently and thinking she was right; you never did know when you could use a crayon when it occurred to him she meant chalk. Chalk it up. Although he supposed crayon was fine too.

"Not much, considering we don't have any crayons. Or chalky crayons," the Doctor shrugged.

He focused on following after Vala and her bobbing torch. That's the spirit, human! Adventuring into all sorts of places, getting lost, finding interesting things worth getting lost for (and some that weren't, but generally there were more pluses than minuses). He had to admit, he found Vala infinitely better company when she wasn't nursing one of those awful smelly drinks humans seemed to be so fond of. Her and Eva, especially. Clearly human olfactory senses were...lacking. As a general rule for their species. And that was being polite about it. He joined Vala as she came to a ledge, her torch's light drifting over the roots and what might've once been a proper set of stairs, now literally in pieces and waiting to twist someone's ankle if only they gave the ex-stairs the chance. Hardly looked stable!

The Doctor glanced at Vala. "You're a very optimistic woman. Now! Manicure probably wouldn't help your traction anyway." The Doctor patted his pockets for some sort of rope -- anything at all to let them come back the way they came. "Rope? Tesla-grade floss? I hope you're not partial to arachnophobia, by the way."

Because there was one of those large, furry jungle spiders with the excessive number of legs wandering closer on the wall to investigate Vala. The Doctor went back to checking his pockets for anything they could use, shining the sonic down the ledge and noticing that there were most certainly Things doing there, scuttling out of the light as Things sometimes do and slithering and scurrying and sneaking away.

Oh, Jamie wasn't about to get away that easily. The Master stepped closer, an affable enough smile on his face, but his eyes practically glittering with malicious glee.

"Ah, yes, the Doctor's gone already. That's got to seem familiar, hasn't it?" He canted his head. "And who have you got?" If Jamie thought the Master would believe himself to be the only one left behind, the human was sorely mistaken.

[identity profile] vissernone.livejournal.com 2011-12-22 06:55 am (UTC)(link)
"No one's found this before. Or if they did, they had much different priorities," Eva says, trying to deduce what she's sure Daniel's already pieced together. Or if they did, they didn't make it back out, she thinks, but that's a morbid thought for a tomb that seems quite peaceful, if you can get past the statues that seem to stare at you with their shiny plated eye sockets.

"What's that you've got there?" She walks over to where Daniel found the jar, although she gives him plenty of personal space. Whether or not they're getting along now - and Eva would insist they only are because it's more pleasant to do an archaeological dig with someone you're fine with than someone you want to tell to back off - she doesn't consider them friends enough anymore to get too close to him, mentally or physically. "A dog? That's different than the crocodiles, at least. Have you seen any indications that they're pantheistic?"

She wanders back out towards the table in the room, examining the objects. She feels as if she shouldn't touch them. They're arranged so neatly, in a concentric sort of order instead of linear, like most Earth humans would probably set them up. She strokes her chin as she thinks on this and realizes her head's bleeding slightly, probably from whatever she snagged herself on. Apparently in catching her hair, it also scraped against her cheekbone. It must have been sticking out quite a lot.

Without asking Daniel's permission, she walks back to the entrance crack to examine it.

Funny, running her hand over the general area of the place she got snagged, she can't seem to find any cracks or rough edges. It seems almost like she must have gotten caught on something that intentionally protruded, although she hasn't quite found what yet. She's about to get her flashlight out when Daniel's words make her whirl around on him.

"You think I don't see the significance?" She blinks at him, then puts her hands on her hips.

"Well. Golly, Daniel. I didn't recognize what dynasty an obscure Egyptian God came from, so clearly I'm too stupid to figure out simple math, like that the number eighteen is a larger number than..." she pretends to count on her hands, making a face like she's thinking really hard, "fifteen, sixteen, seventeen...is eighteen a bigger number than seventeen, Daniel? I don't know, I have a shriveled up little walnut of a brain because I was such a nitwit and studied politics in school instead of investing all my time in archaic dead people! Maybe if I'd bothered to memorize everything about King Tut and Hatshepsut, I'd have noticed that that jar was from the Eighteenth Dynasty, but don't worry, dear, I'm too busy standing in a corner being stupid to one-up your incredibly manly and completely impressive scholarship."

To cap it off, she strokes her chin and pouts. "Besides, I don't want to strain myself thinking about anything harder than Reader's Digest or baking pies."

She turns back around and continues examining the place that caught her.
