Sobek the Immortal [Closed]

Planet Designation: Kalimba Status: Terrestrial, H-class.
Non-sentient life: Extensive flora and fauna.
Semi-Sentient Life: Unknown
Sentient Life: Ruins and step pyramids suggest the presence of intelligent life at some point. Currently: Unknown.
Water: 70.2% of the planet's surface. Heavy rainfall/monsoons.
Climate: Earth-like.
Landscape: Primarily jungle and swamp, some plains, severe arctic conditions in northern and southern poles.
Air: Type I (breathable)
Sky: Blue-green.
Warnings: Medium to high levels of megafauna. Watch your step. Conditions in the atmosphere make several forms of orbital scans and equipment unreliable.
Mission: Archaeological investigation of step pyramids and ruins, investigate for signs of source of abnormal energy signature in target area.

The first thing the group would notice was that Kalimba's air was humid and heavy, with a light breeze. The morning had long since burned off most of the mist, and in the distance, clouds lazily drifted onwards towards the horizon. The typhoon season was a long ways off.

The undergrowth was tangled and dense, seemingly impassable in places. Vibrant flowers and vines took up residence where some of the tree cover faltered. With limited sunlight available, it was every plant for themselves. Disturbed by the archaeology group, "birds", each easily half the size of a person and more salamander than avian suddenly took to the air in a flash of brilliantly colored wings. They were gone almost instantly, slicing through the air and leaving only the ear-splitting shriek behind.

The hill sloped down. The cover of trees broke as they came out onto the stone remains of path that must have once been heavily used. Now, just like everywhere else, massive roots and tanglers tore at the ground, slowly swallowing any signs of civilization back within itself. There were trees of all shapes and sizes as far as the eye could see, a rolling wave of jungle and rainforest. Tan and dirty gray step pyramids, all more massive than those found on Earth, and the occasional obelisk rose through the canopy cover like claws, dotting the landscape.

Stac's scans indicated much of the planet was covered in these structures, with the largest in this location. Aside from the archaeological mission, her scans also indicated the presence of an abnormal power that may be of interest.

"It's their biggest flaw though, the ego. With any luck he'll trip over it and do that cliche thing where they announce their plans because they're so infallible they think it won't matter." Vala breathes out a weary laugh trying to sort through her thoughts, she's trying to tap into her own memories as Qetesh, the ones that her mind has locked away to keep her sane. It's probably not the wisest move, there's a reason parts of her own personal actions are buried so deep she can't easily access them, but there could be something vital in there.

"That was nice of him." Vala grimaces a little at the knowledge Eva now has, but the more pragmatic part of her knows it'll be useful if Eva can tap in without damaging her psyche. If she's been host to similar though, she already has that ability. There are few people Vala truly admires. It's an unfortunate side effect of her own past and personality, yet there's an instinctive belief in Eva that makes her trust her.

"We have nothing, if not time on our hands to get out of this though. We'll find a way." It's a huge admission on Vala's part to use the term 'we', "and we'll get Daniel freed too."

She's not sure if it's just blind optimism, but if it is, who cares? She needs that sort of egotistical confidence to keep going.

"And then he'll send his stupidest minions to guard us. Oldest mistake in the book." Eva would wink if she could. As it is it would be indistinguishable from blinking.

Her mouth twists up into a little half-smile at Vala's optimism. Or maybe just Vala's wishful thinking. It's better than rotting here under the weight of the situation. As tempting as it is to sit here and bemoan their status, Eva knows from experience that all that would do is shut them down. Bury them. Drown them.

Sometimes it would be tempting to drown, but Eva knows Vala must know all that from her experience too.

"Yes. Plenty of time. And two good heads between the two of us." She taps her temple. "I'm sorry for snapping at you earlier, by the way."

The Doctor tried to focus past the haze to the Master’s face. He had one of those looks of his; hungry, wanting more and more like he always did because that was the sort of man he was, despite all the chances to be something better. His vision swam. The Doctor tried to blink it back into focus, thinking he might have it in him to start rambling again – it took him by surprise to realize that no, he didn’t, and in fact whatever energy he had left might be put to better use trying to do his part in all this than word games. Not that he didn't like word games. Time and place and both time/place today were...not good.

Besides, he had feeling he knew what Sobek meant by “proof”.

He didn’t doubt that the Master could do it. Enslave a few planets here and there, amongst other things, and this was really quite a small thing. But he hoped the Master would at least not leak silly things like Gallifreyan technology or their long, boringly deadly history to a beast like this God.

For once the Doctor didn't start rambling about anything under the sun. Instead his eyes just slid from Sobek to the Master, fixing on the other Time Lord and for a moment there was a flicker of that old spark, almost as if he was challenging the Master to do the right thing.

What the "right thing" was, well. Bit of a gray area there. In that plan turning into Plan thing, hopefully.

The Doctor's eyes flickered behind his lids as he tried to fight off the drugs and stimulants running through him. Donna. Donna Noble. That name kept circling around him, just the latest in a string of all the people he made the mistake of taking with him.

And then there was Amy.

Amy suddenly stood next to him, her hand on his. The Doctor turned his head toward his best friend, frowning at her and trying to remember if she'd come with him on the mission or not because the funny thing was, he didn't remember her being there. Neither her or Pond 2. Or maybe he was wrong. Maybe he was old and daft and she'd been there all along, got a bit lost what with all the humans running around and poor Eneesh and it had been more than a busy day, actually. How did she -

"Escape?" Amy had that Amy Pond; I Can Get Myself Out Of This smile of hers. "Easy, big blind spots with helmets like those.”

The Doctor’s lips parted. It didn’t seem to him that was quite plausible but Amy was already trying to tug at the restraints, pulling at them as if sheer force of will was enough to get them moving.

You didn’t tell them anything that can – ” Amy made a blowing up motion with her hand. Amy the Poet, he supposed. Not a very good one and actually he suspected she was probably terrible at it and Rory was loads better at it. “That. Blow us up.

He frowned, gazing at Amy and watching her being impossibly there and feeling the same sense of wrongness creeping in his body, trying to sort out what it was and not yet aware that he’d turned to stare sightlessly over at Sobek. Spend 900 plus, give or take, Ish years in a few of your own bodies and it was only a matter of time before you knew what was where. It was either that or maybe a Time Lord’s physiology wasn’t quite agreeing with the dosage, the Doctor shuddering now as a wave of nausea swept over him.

The Master did hesitate, just a bit. But it wasn't a loss of nerve; instead, he slid a look toward Sobek, his eyebrows raised in slight surprise, like a dog who wasn't sure the bone he'd been given was really his.

It was only a glance, though, before he moved over to the machine decisively and began inspecting the controls, nodding with approval and pointedly ignoring the Doctor's looks. It didn't take him long, of course, to puzzle out how it worked. Soon his fingers were dancing over those controls.

He did look up, eyes meeting the Doctor's, mouth twisting up in a smirk and the drums thundering in anticipation, as he entered the final command into the machine. He didn't want to miss a single second of this.

"Aye, b-but..." His own whisper trails off somewhat uncertainly, his eyes darting over to look towards the closest guard. Oh, he believes that half-truth - her ability to lie easily coupled with the reassuring smile is enough to do that. But even if Sobek did let her eat, it likely wasn't nearly enough, given how little she'd been fed before.

He can't argue with her, though. Not now, when the guards would most certainly notice. It's only sheer luck that they haven't so far. So he twitches his kilt back over the piece of bread, hiding it from view. Maybe later they can work out something. Or he'll leave it tucked safely away when she's sleeping and can't argue with him over it.

"All right." He shifts slightly, placing his hands openly on his lap so if anyone does look they will see they're still empty, and turns his attention to her face instead. It looks like a nasty bruise is forming there, and those scratches on her neck don't look much better. He frowns. What else has that monster wearing Daniel's skin done to her?

"He's also done a few other things, I see," he comments then, his distaste for those actions seeping through into the words. But his concern for her takes over, changing the tone considerably even though he's forced to whisper. "Are ye badly hurt, Vala?"

Witness? Witness what? Despite the urge to balk at the command, try and keep that small shred of defiance he'd managed to pull off alive for just a little longer, Jamie found himself looking towards the System Lord stood. It was a trick. It had to be, Sobek trying to pull something, but he had no idea what it could possibly be. What purpose would there be in showing Jamie something there, apart from trying to prove to him he was actually underestimating the value of his friends?

Which, incidentally, he wasn't. He was well aware how valuable they could be, especially to someone trying to get at their secrets.

But even putting that aside, Sobek was up to something here, and the only way to find out was, well, to cooperate. Piece of fruit still in his hand - if it wasn't going to be taken away, he was definitely going to finish eating it - he cautiously made his way over to look out the window and down at the courtyard below.

The Doctor had time to meet the Master's smirk, his eyes lifting, before this round started.

He choked on his gasp as the plug against his head squealed at a frequency that felt like it was tailored to making a Time Lord's brain boil inside his skull, the coil around his neck burning as he tried to spasm away and found that it was all rather difficult when you were effectively tied down. The Doctor jerked against the restraints. Agony coursed through him starting from his head and working his way down to his toes and then right back up again because apparently this was a round-trip marathon and no one had the courtesy to tell him anything.

It took him a long while to realize that eventually the machine had shut off, perhaps on a timer. Perhaps Sobek had enough time to start getting it through that helm that Time Lords were different and that he needed to adjust his approach.

The Doctor coughed, chest heaving as he opened his eyes, struggling to breathe as his hearts fluttered. Head hurt. Thinking hurt and while that was normally a good thing because it meant he'd actually been given a challenge, this...probably wasn't one of those times. Right. The Master and Sobek. He was just starting to remember where he was, his limbs trembling as he tried to get his body under control.

He might need more than a moment to find his voice again, his hair slicked down with sweat as he tried to make sure his brain hadn't liquified. It hadn't, right?

Not only was the world doing a spinny thing that wasn't entirely natural, Time itself felt like it was stuttering on him. Like he thought he could see those tangents again, the paradoxes, the splits and slivers, and oddly enough, some of them were flickering right back toward the corner where Sobe - Rory? No, Amy, he had his humans right -- had wandered in from. The Doctor tried to concentrate as Amy proved that maybe some alien knots were going to out-Scot a Scot and she was taking an awfully long time to free him, wasn't she? Only one strap! Amy Pond; The Girl Who Takes Forever At Rescues!

Something in the Doctor's head clicked, fighting off the drugs coursing through his system and a dosage that was, quite frankly, not prepped for a Time Lord's physiology.

"Plan? Pond, you know how I am with plans. You of all people!" The Doctor heaved a laugh and was surprised when the laugh turned into a choke as his breath caught in his lungs. The Doctor struggled to breathe as his body went rigid against the restraints. He tried again. "You're hardly professional at jiggery-pokery anyway. Not the level we need."

He seemed like he was about to say more when the Doctor suddenly blinked, seemed to come more aware of his surroundings and then glanced over blindly toward that corner. He caught a glimpse of burning coals for eyes out of the fog.

Something wasn't right. Those hadn't been there before, he was sure of it. The Doctor seemed less interested in having a conversation with Amy now, those eyes drawing him in and making him start to suspect this room wasn't as empty as Amy claimed: so much for the guards taking a lunch break.

The Master watched it all, not flinching, but actually leaning forward, reveling in the Doctor's discomfort with avid eyes. It was clear to anyone observing him that this was not about 'serving his God'. This was personal. This was a vendetta appeased, at least in part.

The whole process was making him feel so much better-- watching the Doctor writhe in clear agony, helpless to stop the assault on the senses. But it was over far too soon, and the Master reached for the controls again, eagerly. Not even giving the Doctor a moment to collect himself.

The scene below wasn't completely unexpected, save for Eneesh's crew being about. Jamie's seen the gatherings of people prostrating themselves over this so-called God of theirs, eager to do his bidding. With a faint curl of his lip, he bit back into the fruit, frowning even as he chewed and watched the gathering in the courtyard.

The crewmen were nervous, understandably so given the fact that Eneesh was dead. But she had been an example, something meant to punish them because they had been defiant. Never mind he had done it too, but that was because they had shot the Doctor after. Sobek had gotten his reaction, and surely that was enough. Besides, if the man wearing Daniel's face wanted information, they'd have some too.

So what was he up to? Jamie swallowed, and was about to take another bite when the lone bug was brought out and forced to stand alone. The Jaffa raised the staff weapon and fired. Jamie felt his guts clench, the piece of fruit he had just eaten like a lead weight in his stomach. Before he could think better of it, he turned to look at Sobek with a horrified expression on his face.

"Hey! What'd ye go and do that for? They've not done anything to anyone!"

A drug. Right. Yeah. Seemed like that would explain the burning feeling going through all veins and other bits, the Doctor shifting as best as he could tied down and finding that it didn't really help things along.

He found his eyes wandering past Amy, as if he could see right around her if he really, really, really tried and put his back into it. The twin coals. Something didn't seem right. Couldn't place a finger on it, nevermind two or three or the rest of his fingers (which, by the way, were still somehow attached -- they hadn't gotten to the bits with the fingers like he assumed they would). The Doctor had to struggle to remember that as a human, Amy had terrible teeth for biting through restraints like these and they literally could be here forever waiting for her to get anywhere.

It was about those two lights he'd seen. The Doctor was sure that if Amy just turned around, she'd see them and do the humany thing and investigate. Maybe find a release switch.

"You knowing wouldn't make a difference, Pond," the Doctor said with a grunt. He didn't sound quite as slurred as before, as if he was starting to revive. He blinked again, trying to focus better on Amy and deciding that this was one of those times that he'd rather have that Something Amy talked about when he was free and not tied to a torture device. "There has to be a release button in the room."

Now that he thought about it, the more he decided any plans or Plans or anything in between was better off staying with him. Amy was tough, but she was also only human, and there was no saying how she could handle Sobek's treatment. Speaking of that God, where was he? Hard to imagine he wandered off in the middle of this!

The Doctor glanced down at the straps, then at Amy's face. Amy was about as beautiful as any human -- not that he was a decent judge of that, never said he was -- but right now there was something terrible about her face. Maybe it was the lighting. Something about her didn't quite seem like the friend he'd known almost literally since childhood (well, hers, anyway. His was quite a bit off) and the more he fought against the fog in his head, the more he started to think that Something Really, Really Wasn't Quite Right here.

He found himself shaking his head.

"No," he said. His voice came out stronger. "No, I don't think you need to know. Maybe you better go back."

He found his gaze once again drawn to that corner. The eyes were back, blazing out from the darkness as a shape began to solidify: metal plates like scales, the outline of a crocodile cocking that head in his direction.

"I'm starting to think saving me is overrated. Don't think I need saving, actually!" The Doctor was definitely recovering far earlier than any human should have, fixing a critical look at Amy and thinking that she looked downright ugly, all harsh lines and an inhuman sort of glint in her eyes. "Off with you, then! I'm busy. Go on!"

He flexed his fingers. Maybe he couldn't escape, but his head was clearing up and he could feel his hands and feet again, which was as promising as the fact that both hearts seemed to be beating just fine and he was sure they weren't alone in the interrogation room now. The Doctor looked at Amy, really looked at her, and it occurred to him that a human's face shouldn't be bubbling in and out. This wasn't his Amy Pond. This wasn't the girl who waited all those years just to take a cricket bat to his head first chance she got. This wasn't the young woman who kept marrying and un-marrying herself.

The Doctor wasn't sure what this was.

He ignored Amy as if she wasn't there, trying to struggle himself and try to work at the restraints as best he could without some imaginary friend being absolutely useless. Sweat beaded and rolled down his skin, his hair matted to his head as he began to revive further from the drug that Sobek had been pumping into him.

And the Master 'obeyed', falling to his knees with a soft grunt. He swung his head around to stare at Sobek and for a split second it wasn't just surprise on his face but rage. The sort of rage a small child might express when a favorite toy was taken from him. All too quickly it slid away, replaced by a simpering smile.

"Of course. My apologies."
