Shore Leave: Geartopia [Open to All]

||Attention all crewmen, shore leave is now in progress, attention crewmen, shore leave is now in progress...||

Stacy's voiced called the entire crew, until all of them were gathered at the Obs Deck. Then, a dossier appeared on the screens, along with the image of a rotating planet.

Nomalanga has given us a map with which areas to avoid.
Mission: Shore leave, and preparing for an attack in a few days, planet's time. Nomalanga has promised food, clothing and animals in exchange for your cooperation in aiding her.

Once, long ago, Geartopia was built by aliens visiting the planet and granting intelligence to some native species. Of course you wouldn't know this apart from the giant black obsidian monoliths humming precariously outside of town. They are formed in a circle formation that might remind those who come from earth of Stonehenge, only built out of a much more study device. This is what Nomalanga used to contact you. The rocks cannot be moved and any attacks on them will be useless. The Wild Ones will come out of the forest at night, leaving a trace of plants as they go back and fro their own forest. The technology the elder aliens left them allows for contact with Stacy but otherwise there is nothing futuristic going on on the planet - the aliens wanted it this way and for the most part the population respects this.

All except Snidley and his goons, of course. Thankfully most of them have gone into hiding once their plot was found out. In fact, Nomalanga and those still loyal to her are busy working on making this planned attack, and getting the townspeople ready for it.

You can also find a few remains of their culture scattered around the land in the form of large stone carvings around the town, in between a wooden tavern bar or used as a sort of tribute, covered in dry plants. Most of the area is dry and arid, with very tiny grass and shrubs growing over the hill, and, strangely enough, an area from town that is densely populated by forest. Few dare go in, due to it being the territory of the Wild Ones.

As you walk around, you notice that the technology is steampunk with a cowboy flare; there is one train that comes from the towns every morning at 6am and leaves at 9pm. Horses can be rented for a price (some normal, some like this), chariot rides as well. Gears and dark clothing seem to be the norm, possibly due that their source of leather. The inhabitants are mostly humans, humanoid animals, alien natives and steampunk robots.

But enough of that, let's see what you can do here:

- Saloon and bars of all sizes, most comically named with an object, and a color. You can find all sorts of them across town, but those on the western side are more sympathetic towards Snidley and hate strangers with a passion. Do not go there unless you're ready to fight a few of them.

They do, however, have the best drinks, and card games.

There are hotels with gear pianos playing wistful tunes as you drink hard liquor made from cactus juice, honey and barley. The honey wine is especially prized and costly.

There is also a small carnival with steampunk and old west fair, sugar and cactus fruit pies, whole animals roasted over open pits, musicians, and a single wooden coaster. It's not much, but the food is excellent.

Be careful, however. The cactus fruit does cause stomach aches for most people not native to this world. Think of it much like lactos intolerance. It's a chance you take eating it. However if you do, it tastes much like an orange, strawberry and a banana were put together in a blender.

As thanks for helping her out, anyone stepping into the city is given by the mayoress as part of her exchange bartering price, one cowboy hat (all brown), one pair of steampunk goggles, a steampunk vest, and, most importantly, one part of leathersnake steampunk boots. This is a gift for anyone who is just visiting to blend with the locals and to prove she's honest about her dealings. As if it wasn't obvious after the first mission, in any case. She'll need your strange and powerful manpower in the upcoming days.

And hey, if you're up to it, you can help with a little cleanup. After all most people here don't know your skills. However, it's also calm and quiet in the farms. You want to do some honest work for a day, they'll give you some of their seeds in exchange. The system seems to be based more on services and barter than any money.

There is still currency and Stacy has given you a few golden coins, spend them wisely. A few farms are opened up to sleep for free, if you don't mind being with the animals.

The General store has steampunk items for sale, but most of them are much too expensive for anyone on the ship to by. You can try to barter.

Oh and news travels fast. Cause problems, and Nomalanga won't be too happy about it.

[OKAY ALL DONE GO FOR IT. You are also free to create additional places, to post your own private logs involving the town! Contact me if you need extra information about Geartopia either via PM to things_go_boom's account or by AIM, I'll be happy to answer. NPC goons if you want to do a bunch of bar fights, just think typical cowboy stuff. Shore leave will last until the 31st and players can go to and from the ship to the city each day, so you can have your characters stay for a day or two and then come back.

People in the miniplots, the mini plots will start up in a few days! There will also be a general fight for anyone who wants to join in on the 29th. Thank you and enjoy yourselves!]

"More or less the same," Tim said with a faint frown as he sat down. "I liked the circus as a kid, but it stopped being feasible to go." And things like clowns didn't have a very good reputation in Gotham, anymore. "Other things to worry about-- which I'm sure you can sympathise with."

He glanced out the window as the ferris wheel began to rise.

[identity profile] tetsuwan-atom.livejournal.com 2011-11-02 03:41 pm (UTC)(link)
"Yeah," said Atom. "There's always stuff in the way. But I guess I can't really complain. I mean, someone's got to be around to go to all the meetings and the hearings and everything." Alas.

"I don't like circuses much, though."
battorch: ([red robin] request)

[personal profile] battorch 2011-11-02 03:53 pm (UTC)(link)
"No? I guess they're not for everyone, really." Tim glanced back at Atom with a curious look. "What, exactly, did your work entail, anyway?" he asked.

[identity profile] tetsuwan-atom.livejournal.com 2011-11-02 04:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Atom sighed. "Oh, you know. All kinds of stuff. I didn't really understand what Professor Ochanomizu went through until I started getting all these requests. I mean, he's the Minister of Science, but they were asking him to approve designs for the new police patrol cars. It's kind of easier to make decisions than tell people why you don't want to, but then more and more people ask you to make 'em."

Sighhhhhh.

[personal profile] battorch 2011-11-02 06:13 pm (UTC)(link)
"Fair enough," Tim said, with a nod. Not that Tim minded the idea of helping people however he could, but... "There's a certain sense of priorities that needs to be taken into account, right?" he asked. "And sometimes people can get a little too reliant with the small things, I imagine." Fortunately Tim didn't deal with that-- his own stuff was more large scale than that.

[identity profile] tetsuwan-atom.livejournal.com 2011-11-02 06:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Tim's answer was an enigmatic smile.

Atom peered out at the crowd as the ferris wheel rose, waving to the people far below. As the wheel lifted them aloft, they could see the rest of the town and all its townfolk bustling about their daily business.

[personal profile] battorch 2011-11-03 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
Atom was kind of tough to get a read on, honestly. Tim nodded faintly, and looked out over the town, scanning the people and the shapes. He was still worried over the entire situation, but there wasn't any current trouble, at least.

"Have you been adjusting to the ship well?" he asked, after a moment.

[identity profile] tetsuwan-atom.livejournal.com 2011-11-03 02:34 am (UTC)(link)
Atom glanced over at Tim. "I guess so. It's not exactly the kind of thing you want to wake up to, you know, being told that Earth is gone. But the people on the ship are pretty nice."

Don't worry, Tim, even robots sometimes have trouble reading Atom.
battorch: ([red robin] shadow in broad daylight)

[personal profile] battorch 2011-11-04 02:02 am (UTC)(link)
"No, I don't think it is for anyone," Tim grimaced. "But unfortunately we can't really do anything about that directly. We just have to fight to prevent the situation from deteriorating further. And I guess hold onto hope that we can return our own worlds."

[identity profile] tetsuwan-atom.livejournal.com 2011-11-04 02:51 pm (UTC)(link)
"Yeah... if we can go back, that is." Atom pressed his hands to the glass, still looking outside. "I don't know of anyone that can put a universe back together. Not even in science fiction."
battorch: ([red robin] explanation)

[personal profile] battorch 2011-11-05 02:39 am (UTC)(link)
"Supposedly it can be done," Tim said. A lot of this, admittedly, was way out of his league. There was a reason he didn't play a big role in any of the Crises at home, after all. "We don't have much choice but to hope it's true." Even if Tim didn't sound overly convinced.

[identity profile] tetsuwan-atom.livejournal.com 2011-11-05 06:48 am (UTC)(link)
"If they can pull it off, that sure would be something," said Atom thoughtfully, "But it might all be just a big story. It would be better to find out the truth behind the war."
battorch: ([red robin] thinkthink)

[personal profile] battorch 2011-11-08 09:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Tim rose an eyebrow under the cowl at Atom's realism. He wasn't sure he'd expected that from him.

"There's definitely far too much we still don't know," Tim agreed. "We have to be careful of what we take at face value, at least." Personally, he wanted to discover as much as he could. Being controlled by the word of others didn't sit right with him.

[identity profile] tetsuwan-atom.livejournal.com 2011-11-09 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
"Yeah. People in charge come up with all kinds of reasons to start wars," said Atom. "They have to, or else nobody would fight them."

Honor, innate superiority, resources, religion... there were so many to choose from.
battorch: ([red robin] shadow in broad daylight)

[personal profile] battorch 2011-11-09 02:49 am (UTC)(link)
Tim nodded again, and turned his attention back outside their carriage. "So it becomes a matter of what we're willing to fight for, too." Not that they're given much choice, themselves.

[identity profile] tetsuwan-atom.livejournal.com 2011-11-09 04:53 am (UTC)(link)
Now they were starting the downward portion of the ferris wheel's revolution. "I don't really want to fight anyone," Atom said with a frown. "I guess sometimes you have to, but it's better to solve things peacefully."
battorch: ([red robin] prepared)

[personal profile] battorch 2011-11-10 05:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Tim laughed faintly, and bitterly. "I think you might be in the minority here, unfortunately," he said. "I agree that avoiding fighting at all is ideal. But I'll certainly fight when I have to-- and I think this case, we're not given much in the way of options." Still, he'd stick to his own ethics.

[identity profile] tetsuwan-atom.livejournal.com 2011-11-10 06:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Atom glanced back at him. "What do you mean? I haven't met anybody so far who wants to fight."
battorch: ([red robin] thinkthink)

[personal profile] battorch 2011-11-10 07:49 pm (UTC)(link)
"Well, not exactly that-- that was a bit hyperbolic," Tim grimaced. "Though there are some who would gladly fight, I'm sure. For most its simply a matter of duty. But there are also those who shun the thought of diplomacy, though it is true that it seems futile in our case." He shook his head.

[identity profile] tetsuwan-atom.livejournal.com 2011-11-10 07:54 pm (UTC)(link)
"You don't think we can find a way to get along with the Ohm?" That's what almost everyone said, but whether it was true or not, Atom couldn't say; he'd never met them for himself.

"Anyway, they probably have reasons for not wanting to try diplomacy. It's hard to try to hold your hand out to someone who destroyed your home and the people you cared about. That's just how people are."

That's what hatred was.
battorch: ([red robin] mediate)

[personal profile] battorch 2011-11-11 09:18 pm (UTC)(link)
"That's the popular opinion," Tim explained. "I think it's hard to say. They seem to be sentient," something that caused a lot of problems, for him, "but it also doesn't seem overly likely that we can communicate and reason with them."

But Atom was right. Whether it was possible or not, it wasn't like they could really fault them for not wanting to try diplomacy. Tim understood that feeling, had since before all of this. "I think that's true. Looking at what the Ohm have done and what they're currently doing, it's not exactly easy to even consider peace." Tim wasn't sure he had considered the option very much.

[identity profile] tetsuwan-atom.livejournal.com 2011-11-12 02:08 pm (UTC)(link)
He frowned. "Maybe it's just a matter of finding the right common ground." Electronic communications were difficult if you didn't have the right decryption protocols, for instance. And someone from, say, an earlier point in the timeline might not be able to understand you at all.

"But that's why we have to consider it," Atom pressed. "Because it's hard and because not everyone wants to. It's never going to happen if we give up on it."
battorch: ([red robin] thinkthink)

[personal profile] battorch 2011-11-12 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Tim nodded. "Which is, admittedly difficult. But not necessarily impossible."

He looked a little wistful at that, but he frowned in thought. "You're right. There's no reason to discount the possibility, as uncomfortable or unlikely as it might seem." Even if Tim wasn't entirely sure the Ohm deserved the chance. But he quickly dismissed that thought. "There are, fortunately, those that would pursue the idea. I'd be more than happy to see some results coming from that direction."

[identity profile] tetsuwan-atom.livejournal.com 2011-11-13 04:05 am (UTC)(link)
"Yeah. If we can communicate with them, then we should. It doesn't even have to be through words." After all, wasn't his first contact with Sahad nonverbal? An involuntary communication, composed of emotion alone...

"I really hope so. I'm going to do all I can to help, too. I don't know a lot about psychic bugs, but I'm sure there's some way I could pitch in."
battorch: ([red robin] prepared)

[personal profile] battorch 2011-11-14 06:20 am (UTC)(link)
Tim nodded. "There are probably options, yes," he allowed. "It just may take some exploration to see what they might be.

"At any rate, your willingness to try and find a way is a good start, if nothing else. I don't think that many of us have 'psychic bug' experience, in the end. So it's a matter or doing whatever we can despite that."
