Shore Leave: Geartopia [Open to All]

||Attention all crewmen, shore leave is now in progress, attention crewmen, shore leave is now in progress...||

Stacy's voiced called the entire crew, until all of them were gathered at the Obs Deck. Then, a dossier appeared on the screens, along with the image of a rotating planet.

Once, long ago, Geartopia was built by aliens visiting the planet and granting intelligence to some native species. Of course you wouldn't know this apart from the giant black obsidian monoliths humming precariously outside of town. They are formed in a circle formation that might remind those who come from earth of Stonehenge, only built out of a much more study device. This is what Nomalanga used to contact you. The rocks cannot be moved and any attacks on them will be useless. The Wild Ones will come out of the forest at night, leaving a trace of plants as they go back and fro their own forest. The technology the elder aliens left them allows for contact with Stacy but otherwise there is nothing futuristic going on on the planet - the aliens wanted it this way and for the most part the population respects this.

All except Snidley and his goons, of course. Thankfully most of them have gone into hiding once their plot was found out. In fact, Nomalanga and those still loyal to her are busy working on making this planned attack, and getting the townspeople ready for it.

You can also find a few remains of their culture scattered around the land in the form of large stone carvings around the town, in between a wooden tavern bar or used as a sort of tribute, covered in dry plants. Most of the area is dry and arid, with very tiny grass and shrubs growing over the hill, and, strangely enough, an area from town that is densely populated by forest. Few dare go in, due to it being the territory of the Wild Ones.

As you walk around, you notice that the technology is steampunk with a cowboy flare; there is one train that comes from the towns every morning at 6am and leaves at 9pm. Horses can be rented for a price (some normal, some like this), chariot rides as well. Gears and dark clothing seem to be the norm, possibly due that their source of leather. The inhabitants are mostly humans, humanoid animals, alien natives and steampunk robots.

But enough of that, let's see what you can do here:

- Saloon and bars of all sizes, most comically named with an object, and a color. You can find all sorts of them across town, but those on the western side are more sympathetic towards Snidley and hate strangers with a passion. Do not go there unless you're ready to fight a few of them.

They do, however, have the best drinks, and card games.

There are hotels with gear pianos playing wistful tunes as you drink hard liquor made from cactus juice, honey and barley. The honey wine is especially prized and costly.

There is also a small carnival with steampunk and old west fair, sugar and cactus fruit pies, whole animals roasted over open pits, musicians, and a single wooden coaster. It's not much, but the food is excellent.

Be careful, however. The cactus fruit does cause stomach aches for most people not native to this world. Think of it much like lactos intolerance. It's a chance you take eating it. However if you do, it tastes much like an orange, strawberry and a banana were put together in a blender.

As thanks for helping her out, anyone stepping into the city is given by the mayoress as part of her exchange bartering price, one cowboy hat (all brown), one pair of steampunk goggles, a steampunk vest, and, most importantly, one part of leathersnake steampunk boots. This is a gift for anyone who is just visiting to blend with the locals and to prove she's honest about her dealings. As if it wasn't obvious after the first mission, in any case. She'll need your strange and powerful manpower in the upcoming days.

And hey, if you're up to it, you can help with a little cleanup. After all most people here don't know your skills. However, it's also calm and quiet in the farms. You want to do some honest work for a day, they'll give you some of their seeds in exchange. The system seems to be based more on services and barter than any money.

There is still currency and Stacy has given you a few golden coins, spend them wisely. A few farms are opened up to sleep for free, if you don't mind being with the animals.

The General store has steampunk items for sale, but most of them are much too expensive for anyone on the ship to by. You can try to barter.

Oh and news travels fast. Cause problems, and Nomalanga won't be too happy about it.

[OKAY ALL DONE GO FOR IT. You are also free to create additional places, to post your own private logs involving the town! Contact me if you need extra information about Geartopia either via PM to things_go_boom's account or by AIM, I'll be happy to answer. NPC goons if you want to do a bunch of bar fights, just think typical cowboy stuff. Shore leave will last until the 31st and players can go to and from the ship to the city each day, so you can have your characters stay for a day or two and then come back.

People in the miniplots, the mini plots will start up in a few days! There will also be a general fight for anyone who wants to join in on the 29th. Thank you and enjoy yourselves!]

Maxine smiled brightly as Atom worked on the strays who were obviously a little bit more stubborn than the rest. "Good luck!" she cheered helpfully, and she began to focus her wind a little bit more-- not enough to hurt them or anything, of course! But enough to herd them a little bit further.

Slowly, the Shepofalant began making their way into the corral, some looking at them a little reproachfully as they did so and munching on the grass on the way. When they were finally inside, Atom shut the door, fastening the gate.

"Okay, chores done!"

"Great!" Maxine said, very loudly and enthusiastically. She was genuinely happy and proud that the two of them had managed to herd the animals successfully. "That was awesome," she said encouragingly, letting her wind die down to a gentle breeze for a second before it dissipated completely. "Is there anything else we should do?"

[identity profile] tetsuwan-atom.livejournal.com 2011-11-02 12:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Atom shook his head. "I think that's it! C'mon, let's go ask the farmer if we can get a ride now!"

He began making his way up to a grassy hill, where a canine man in coveralls was looking after a group of horses, some still grazing and saddle-less in the field.

"Great!" Maxine said brightly, and she followed after Atom on foot, moving quickly and excitedly.

She stopped though when she saw the horses, face shifting to something more like silent awe. "Oh wow..." she said, looking them over. She was looking forward to this a lot. She just knew it was going to be a lot of fun.

The farmer in charge was more than happy to set them up with two horses, first helping Atom on by providing a set of wooden steps and bringing a horse up alongside for him to get on. Once Atom's feet were securely in the stirrups and the reins were in his hands, the man gave him some simple instructions: pull the reins to the side to instruct the animal to turn, pull back to tell it to stop.

Atom's horse (whose name was Comet, by the way) moved off a few steps and waited for Maxine.

Maxine, at least, had the advantage of her flight to be able to lift herself up onto the horse, though she was very careful to not bother the horse too much with it. Once she had received instructions from the farmer, as well, she nodded enthusiastically and thanked him, then gently guided the horse to Atom's, the biggest smile on her face.

"C'mon," she said brightly to him. "Let's go!"

[identity profile] tetsuwan-atom.livejournal.com 2011-11-03 02:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Atom urged Comet forward; the pinto obliged by trotting forward and starting down along the nearby riding trail.

"Whoa," he said, voice a little distorted by the movement of the ride, "This is a lot bumpier than I thought."

[personal profile] windwitch 2011-11-04 02:01 am (UTC)(link)
"It is pretty bumpy," Maxine agreed with a nod, urging her own horse-- Dorothy-- forward. "I kind of knew it would be a bit, I've read up on this kind of thing before, but I guess I didn't quite expect it to be like this, either. It's more so than I thought, but it's nice anyway!"

[identity profile] tetsuwan-atom.livejournal.com 2011-11-04 02:49 pm (UTC)(link)
As they approached a shallow stream, Comet began picking his way along the stones of the riverbed, sneaking a drink here and there while Atom wasn't paying attention.

"Yeah, it's pretty different from how it looks in the movies." Atom patted the big horse's neck. "Horses are pretty big, huh?" So big, in fact, that his stirrups had had to be adjusted and pulled up high in order for Atom to fit in them.

[personal profile] windwitch 2011-11-07 06:41 pm (UTC)(link)
"They really are," Maxine said with a smile, petting her horse's neck gently. She glanced over at Atom with a bit of a giggle. "Though I guess it's worse for you, huh? No offense or anything." She was a decent bit taller than him, after all. "I don't think I ever imagined actually doing this. I've seen and done a lot of crazy things in my life, but this is something so simple..."

[identity profile] tetsuwan-atom.livejournal.com 2011-11-07 07:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Atom waved a hand at Maxine's concern. "I'm used to it. Besides, being short isn't so bad." And he was, after all, taller than Jr.

"You never thought you'd be riding a horse?" Atom blinked. "How come?"

Underneath him, Comet snorted as he made his way across the stream.
windwitch: (serene)

[personal profile] windwitch 2011-11-07 09:43 pm (UTC)(link)
"I don't think it's anything bad, no," Maxine agreed with a smile.

Maxine gently nudged Dorothy to follow after Comet, letting out a thoughtful hum. "Well, it's not so much that I never thought I'd ride a horse as I never thought about it much, I guess. I lived in cities most of my life so it wasn't a big thing."

[identity profile] tetsuwan-atom.livejournal.com 2011-11-08 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
"Hey, me too," Atom said as Comet picked his way back up the other side of the bank. "Living in the city, I mean. Or near one. I spent a lot of time at the Ministry of Science in Tokyo. Anyway, we didn't really have any horses. Plenty of flying cars, though!"
windwitch: (excitement)

[personal profile] windwitch 2011-11-10 01:45 am (UTC)(link)
"Oh wow, that's so cool!" Maxine said. "I've never been to Tokyo. Actually I've only been out of America a few times, but I guess I saw some amazing things, so I can't really complain. Was it nice, in Tokyo? Or I guess near, you said that." A beat, and then, "And flying cars, really? I was never sure if something like that would ever really come about, it'd take a lot of energy for something as innovative as that. That's really amazing!"

[identity profile] tetsuwan-atom.livejournal.com 2011-11-10 06:19 pm (UTC)(link)
"Yeah, they are pretty neat," said Atom, smiling at Maxine's enthusiasm. "And they're pretty fast, too, if you need to get somewhere. And there was all kinds of stuff to do there, like go to the zoo and science expos..." Not that Atom had always been able to do those things.
windwitch: (serene)

[personal profile] windwitch 2011-11-10 07:46 pm (UTC)(link)
"That's so cool," she said pleasantly. She urged her horse on, stroking her mane gently. "I never really went to things like that that often, or if I did it was usually just my grandmother taking me, but the things like science expos were always so fascinating! I loved reading about the history and thoughts of lots of amazing things. Did you like them too, Atom?"

[identity profile] tetsuwan-atom.livejournal.com 2011-11-10 07:58 pm (UTC)(link)
"Yeah, it was pretty interesting. There's a lot of inventions you can see at conventions and stuff that you can't see anywhere. Like advanced robots."

Comet had apparently decided now that they'd hit an open field, it was time to speed up; Atom's voice became slightly distorted as he bobbed up and down in the saddle.
windwitch: (excitement)

[personal profile] windwitch 2011-11-14 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
"That's so cool," Maxine said happily. She gently pushed Dorothy to speed up as soon as she saw Comet doing the same, not wanting to lose sight of Atom! Edging the horse on, she tried to reply over the bumpiness and the distance.

"I guess we had a lot of things like that, too, and I tried to go to them, when I could! Especially the ones that were like cutting edge science things, it was always a wonder to see. There could be some pretty crazy stuff in my world, and we had a couple of big companies that sponsored a lot of research. I guess it must have been almost nothing compared to a society as advanced as yours, though!"

[identity profile] tetsuwan-atom.livejournal.com 2011-11-14 04:14 pm (UTC)(link)
"Nah," Atom said over the bumpiness of the ride. "We were more advanced with some stuff, but people are people. Everyone still goes to work and goes to see movies and stuff."

Comet snorted as Dorothy came up behind; clearly this was now a race. The horse surged forward along the trail.

"Whoa!" Atom held on tightly as his mount took off. "You wanna race, huh?"
windwitch: (excitement)

[personal profile] windwitch 2011-11-18 04:31 am (UTC)(link)
"I think that's really cool," Maxine assured him with a smile. "It's like-- you know, human nature. It's always interesting, to see, how things do or don't change, you know?"

With a delighted laugh, she nodded and urged Dorothy to speed up, racing to catch up to Comet. "A race sounds like fun, I think!"

[identity profile] tetsuwan-atom.livejournal.com 2011-11-18 07:06 am (UTC)(link)
Comet sped across the field, leaving a trail of crushed grass under his hooves. Atom grinned as he held on tight. "Okay! First one to that stream over there wins!"

His horse snorted, seemingly understanding... or maybe it was just that he was headed in that direction anyway.
windwitch: (excitement)

[personal profile] windwitch 2011-11-24 07:05 pm (UTC)(link)
"Okay, that sounds good!" Regardless of Comet's reasoning, Dorothy seemed pretty into it-- and Maxine encouraged that completely, urging the horse along gently. "Come on, you can do it!" Maxine cheered to her horse, and the animal sped up in response, to gain on Atom and Comet.

[identity profile] tetsuwan-atom.livejournal.com 2011-11-25 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
What? That other horse was catching up! Comet whinnied as Dorothy came up alongside him while he made a beeline for the finish.

Just a little more...
windwitch: (Default)

[personal profile] windwitch 2011-12-01 04:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Dorothy snorted as Comet turned, and she pressed on to speed after him. She was close to catching him--

And then she suddenly stopped, jostling Maxine abruptly. And started eating a particularly nice patch of grass.

"Oh," Maxine giggled.
