Re: Daniel Jackson || Sub Temple B

"Implements? What do you mean?" It's not like Howard's never heard the word before, but he always assumed it was just a verb. Then again, he's not sure what an omnivore is either. "Didn't find any animal remains, but I wasn't really looking. Got distracted by the noose things around the gardens. Pretty smart, hanging bad guys up like that, if that's what they were doing. Sends a message and the rot makes good fertilizer."

Then again, maybe the little noose and hook contraptions were for other purposes. Howard's just been making logical guesses at what he's seen, but it wouldn't surprise him if his interpretation of the structures were especially morbid.

"You gonna want this back?" he stops and asks, with the pencil halfway to his mouth. It's probably rude to chew on other people's pencils, but if he doesn't go out of his way not to nibble on Daniel's then he'll probably exercise that nervous tic without thinking about it. He does appreciate the pencil, though, but regards it with some suspicion; there's still some part of him that doesn't quite understand being given something, even something small, with nothing expected in immediate return.

He doesn't notice the discoloration, instead moving to crouch by the drain holes by the door. He knows nothing of stone-cutting, nothing of architecture and design; it doesn't occur to him that the different texture could be the result of style instead of accident. They never built anything back home. The residents of the FAYZ never made the transition from a ragged band of survivors to a society. Culture, but no civilization.

He shines the flashlight down and then, after a moment of consideration, runs his finger around the rim of one of the drains. "Red rust. That means iron and water, right? Or algae?" Stupid question. Where there is algae, there is water.

Water, water...water that has passed through these drains recently, even though the site has been abandoned for ages. Which means it's coming from a source large enough that time hasn't moved it or dried it. Which means whoever built this place probably intended for these drains to be used long after they were dead.

The wheels start turning in his head. He stands up again, looking as pleased as Daniel sounds. It's not as if he's looking to prove anything Daniel, but in some sense he wants to impress upon him 'see, I may not be book smart but I Know Things'. He wipes some of the dust off his knees and cocks his head at the door with an anticipatory little grin.

"Nope. No handle. Ready for some Arc of the Covenant nonsense?"

Oh yeah, Daniel. He totally looked up famous archaeologists after your last conversation.
