Daniel's eyes were still on the crystals. One or two had a dull glow, but it was hard to tell if that was from them or the light drifting in. He moved to a new spot, head stilled craned upwards. No, couldn't tell from here either.
"Who knows if that's what they are. Could have been lights, could have been some sort of floating mosaic. Maybe some religious function, like the ceiling in the Battistero di San Giovanni," Daniel mused to the air. The mosaic ceiling there didn't have anything quite like this. On second thought, it probably wasn't like the Florence ceiling.
"Or it could be a form of instruction? Of course, it could just be decorative-," Daniel trailed off, the realization setting in. He jolted a little as if pinched. Someone else was in here.
Daniel looked over at Howard, unable to hide the brief flash of annoyance or the frustration. Howard's arrival might as well have been as messy and loud as a herd of elephants through a china store. The kid had effectively ruined the image he'd been trying to build up of how this place might have existed in its prime. Daniel barely had any time at all to take in the structure as it was, untouched without others disrupting the site and breaking the dead's silence. He thought he'd been onto something. Granted, most of it had been instinct, imagination, and what he'd gleaned from the general site, but Daniel's gut was telling him there was something there. Now it was gone. Of course he could try again later, but writing it down in a notebook after the fact wasn't the same as a first impression caught in the moment. Thanks a lot.
The need to greedily keep the site to himself, luckily, wasn't anywhere near as strong as the urge to share what he found, and to teach. Daniel offered a small, apologetic smile. It wasn't like he had any more right to the site than anyone else. This place belonged to a people long gone. And no one else would see how wonderful this was after Stacy's crew had gone. Howard should see it too.
"I don't know if they're naturally occurring or artificial. I think we'd have to get up there and have a closer look," Daniel motioned Howard to come into the main chamber. "Sorry, I didn't hear you. Come on in?"
