Lirath - Ground Battle

After dropping off some of the crew at Balisair, it was time for the crew to set course for Lirath. The situation greeting them wasn't the most promising.

The cracked surface of the moon called Lirath was one of its most unmistakeable features. One of the three moons of the planet Kehoe, it had been terraformed and served as a settlement for a hundreds of different species, some humanoid, some not. Despite occasional class struggles, environmental issues, and speciesism blocking their way, the darker parts of Lirath's past were largely left behind, and an era of peace and tolerance had reigned for quite some time. The only problems they'd had recently were with a terrorist group whose cause for their actions had been a mystery, but they weren't tied to any particular species or social group and had been likened to a cult and had largely gone quiet in recent years.

Now the peace on the moon of Lirath had been shattered by the invasion of the Ohm.

The capital city had been destroyed. Now, all that was left of the peoples of Lirath was evacuating from one of its smaller cities, one known as Smyteval. A desert city, existing in a valley in between a rocky range of canyons and mountains, even though it was in the low ground, the natural channels of rock served as bottlenecks for any Ohm attacking from the ground.

GIA squadrons patrolled in space, locked in explosive warfare, protecting the Bleed-gate that had been activated to see the evacuated ships to the refugee world, and a shield created by massively-powerful shield generators extended around the city and up into the atmosphere, creating a shielded tunnel so ships could escape.

Word had come that there was a vital weapon to be deployed on Lirath, one that needed to be destroyed, hence why the Transmigration 9 had been called in. Given the diverse crew, and the ships that were in its hangar, there was at least someone or something on board that could blow the weapon up if it did show.

There was no sign of it yet. Right now, there was just chaos, streams of evacuees boarding ships, armies of Ohm engaged with GIA soldiers outside the shields, and forcefields that everyone hoped would hold out just a little bit longer.

The crew would be following Leon's orders but finding themselves fighting side-by-side with GIA platoons, full of various species that were currently all getting their asses kicked severely.

I'd say we could all use one.

As the swarm of additional airborne Ohm bore down upon them, Zouichi fired the Nightmare's anti-Vajra cannon once more, lighting up the sky in a brilliant burst of energy.

"You get paid?" asked Zouichi, deadpanning. "Nice fireworks."

Now that he was up in the air, the remaining Shrikes following in his vapor trail, he shifted to fighter mode for that extra burst of speed, banking hard to the left as he fired a series of Sentinel rockets, breaking up the last of his airborne pursuit.

He switched back to Battroid to unleash some machine gun rounds on some of ground troops in the area, careful to avoid fire from the beleaguered GIA forces. Out of the corner of his eye, however, he thought he detected a flash of... something.

"There might be a couple of Assassins running around here," he said, glancing about. "And I'd say you'd be a pretty high priority target. Watch yourself."

One of the Firebugs went reeling at the impact, hitting the ground and not getting back up again. One of the others followed suit, but didn't go completely down just yet. Time was bought however, so those showers of acid ceased for a little while.

The Bombardiers went down a few in number after that last attack, but few still remained in the sky, their aim now at Cargn. They circled back, diving toward him though they stayed smell enough distance away from each other to not all get hit with one attack. Another drop of acidic bombs were let down on the group, while the Tank Clark threw landed roughly on the ground. But it was back up quickly, and charging at him again.

And from beneath Kaya's feet, a Devourer Worm suddenly lurched up from right under her.

Will landed on the ground as that tornado appeared, already moving to channel her energy to throw her lightning over in the same direction of Aqua's magic to hit more of the Ohm.

"Ah--!" Jr. saw that familiar rumble of the ground just before...

Damned if he wasn't going to try-- he ran toward Billy to try and make it to him in time. "Look out!"

[identity profile] ohm-nom-nom.livejournal.com 2011-08-14 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
But with barely any time for him to move, the worm broke fully through the surface. It of course wasn't expecting Billy to be right there, but it was quick enough to realize him and try to close its acid-full mouth around his foot.

Sasami followed suit, launching another Blizarra attack. However, another Grunt escaped her attack and made a lunge at her.

Before anyone could react to the scream, the three would see a frozen Grunt close to Sasami, a claw snagging the rope belt around her skirting.

"Andy," Billy grinned, mowing at the Grunts now. His lance was perfect for catching them and throwing them back, preferably into each other. That usually left them prime targets for stabbing.

He activated their communications system with a brief brush on his wrist. Let's get them on their feet. As soon as we have a clearing, shall we call the Thunderzords and group up?

Negi's heart skipped a beat when he heard Sasami yell like that, but when he looked, he breathed a sigh of relief. "Okay, bunch up. We'll need to hit this hard and fast."

He raised a hand as magic gathered around it. "Lightning Element." And he casually decapitated the grunt holding onto Sasami with the dark energy sword.

"Shoot!" Billy yelled, voice pitching up in pain as it indeed snagged his foot, piercing the boot, armor, and eating its way to the skin and muscle. This was terrible pain, the damage just starting.

Blinded by pain, he thrust his lance out and dragged it down the worm on his way down, hoping that no one was below. It was likely to be spilling toxic fluids.

And now that he was weak, he was sure the other Ohm were going to tear him apart. A shaky hand held his blaster, shooting at all flashes of claws to buy himself just a little more time.

Grif liked to complain about fighting. He was slow, still not in the best shape, and just not suited for it. Really, he was getting stomach-churning flashbacks to the fight with the zombies in the Vatican already.

But still, it was better than being down on the valley floor. Grif felt more comfortable playing sniper. He wasn't the best at that either, true, but he was safer doing it. He was further away from the enemy and less likely to panic.

He had carried two guns into this fight: the long-barreled sniper rifle that he was looking down the sights of now, and the battle rifle across his back. He was hoping things stayed far enough away that he wouldn't have to turn to the latter.

Instead of falling in with one of the GIA soldiers, Grif had opted to follow the draconian kid. He had decided she was pretty much okay. He was more comfortable with her watching his back than some professional trooper guy that made him feel a bit inadequate in comparison.

"They'd better be right about this," Grif growled, sighting in on another target. He lay on his belly, the rifle propped between two rocks. For once, his orange armor was not too much of a disadvantage. It didn't stick out that much from the dry, sandy earth and stone.

Terror struck Aqua when she heard Sasami's scream, and she only just had the chance to breathe a sigh of relief when she saw that Sasami had frozen it. It had been a good idea to set up the D-Link.

But that was it. Aqua gripped her Keyblade tightly and began a Time Splicer attack--stopping time on several Grunts while teleporting around to attack them wildly. When she was through, most of the Grunts had fallen dead while others were still caught by a Slow spell and were easy enough for her to finish off.

[identity profile] kandrakar-heart.livejournal.com 2011-08-14 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
Will moved forward, launching more of her Quintessence over towards those grunts that had survived Aqua and Negi's assaults.

He let out an emphasized 'phew!' when the GIA members appeared. Whether he trusted them or not, right now he was glad they had the extra hand.

Jr. next idea wouldn't be his greatest moment, however. Being on the outside of the GERWALK gave him some extra shielding, that much was true. But he didn't have a lot of room to move himself, either. Not that on the ground was much different when you had swarms of Grunts and Assassins and other Ohm. So clearly the sky was the next best thing.

When one of the few Bombardiers that managed to swoop out of the way of the Nightmare's cannon got close enough, Jr. jumped on top of it, steering clear of where he watched to see where its acid attacks came from.

While she had frozen the Ohm, she had realized that her skirting nearly killed her. Negi had stepped on it during their training and now an Ohm nearly used it to kill her.

Pulling away from the Ohm's frozen carcass, she let the rope belt be torn and the skirting drop to the ground, showing what hid underneath - short shorts, shin plates similar to what Reimi had...

And bladed anklets, which an advancing Ohm was greeted with, cutting into it.

"No... you're not getting me! I won't let you!"

"Well, for the moment, I think the primary concern is to avoid death and try to help our comrades do so as well, right or not." She smiled at him, allowing a tiny corner of her mind to relax, sweeping the battlefield, lining up another shot and firing. Grif was not as good as Grosk, but Girf was much better than a faceless soldier she did not know at all. At the very least, she had faith that he would at least shout if something tried to sneak up on them.

"Have you done this before?" She had only her father's explanations of the Ohm to work off of, any battle when taken from the meeting room to the field disintegrated into chaos, no matter how well planned.

Having found a suitably out of sight location Bight had seen fit make sure Crucible joined the battle. Surveying the battle from above his sharp eyes picked up the two embattled and out numbered crew members. It looked like they could use some help, tilting on wingtip he dove down towards them.

Inhaling even as he pulled up sharply and exhaled, a bright beam of searing light sweeping through the front ranks of the grunts, hopefully getting the attention of some of the bombardiers away from the two in the process, his massive form passing over head before banking around to make another pass.

"Enlarge Person," Aibghalien said, pointing at Signum, then at Ben in the form of Big Chill as a crystal by his side shimmered. "Quickened Enlarge Person. Celena, project force in front of them, they're moving too fast to stop easily if I'm any guess. Quickened Elation," he added, the crystal shattering as he drained the last of the energy from the crystal and it shattered. A remarkable feeling of well-being flooded through them all, strengthening and quickening them.

Then he smoothly drew a wand from his belt, pointed it at the group Big Chill had not engaged, and launched a fireball directly into their midst.

Aqua continued attacking the Ohm, finally raising her Keyblade in the air and creating magic circles. Teleporting into the air, she struck each circle with her Keyblade, slamming them into the Ohm beyond her.

[identity profile] hisfathersstaff.livejournal.com 2011-08-14 01:41 am (UTC)(link)
Negi smirked at that, continuing his chanting. Power was building and the Ohm could sense it as they attacked, but a shield of energy was building around him, courtesy of Chamo who held his Pactio card below.

Targeting glyphs appeared everywhere and the crackle of ozone grew sharp in the air.

[identity profile] the-team-sucks.livejournal.com 2011-08-14 01:44 am (UTC)(link)
Grif did not reply immediately, busy sending a fifty caliber round through a grenadier's head. Ha! He made that shot!

"Not with space bugs, I haven't!" he replied, raising his voice a bit over the growing din. "It was zombies!"

Oh god the zombies. Zombie nightmares forever. At least the Ohm weren't... you know. Rotting.

... Okay, Will REALLY needed to look into figuring out how to make new ways of having her lightning do stuff. Or learn how to use a sword. Or a rocket launcher. Or power armor.

Because really, all she had was flinging lightning around. Which she did. Again.

[identity profile] saint-sami.livejournal.com 2011-08-14 01:48 am (UTC)(link)
Part of Sasami right now was thinking the same thing, Will - it was only so far that a staff could do in fighting these beasts. Smacking a few of them, she followed it up with Finish, a set of magic orbs spiraling around the girl and sending Ohm flying as she did.

[identity profile] carrieswar.livejournal.com 2011-08-14 01:49 am (UTC)(link)
At first the red-head wasn't positive what Crucible was at a distance - in the chaos he could have been anything, even a kind of Ohm. And considering he couldn't just stare because another Grunt had made a move on him, nicking the side of his left arm as Jr. barely made it away in time to avoid the intended target of his stomach. By the time Crucible was close enough and diving though, Jr. recognized him. Hadn't he seen the dragon before? Back on Stacy that time, swimming in the river.

Welp. He couldn't have asked for better luck. He saw Billy take out the worm, but not without getting his foot messed up. To make sure the ranger stayed alive (because Jr. wasn't going to fail anybody else, no matter what it took), Jr. moved right up next to him, sending bullets flying. Normal bullets, bullets surrounded by a blue aura of ice when he quickly enchanted it with an Ether spell. And if a creature managed to sneak its way close enough, he'd pause the gunshots and just let out a large general ice Ether attack; lances of ice coming down to skewer them.

Crucible didn't go unnoticed by the Ohm. The attack took out a good number of Bombardiers and Grunts, but the Bombardiers that remained split, one group turning toward him while the others wanted to focus on taking the other two out. When the dragon was low enough, one of the Tanks catapulted itself from the ground to try and ram him. But that wasn't all. On the Tank's back a group of Grenadiers gathered, ready to leap for it and aim for the large creature.

The Firebugs a distance away also saw him as a good target, large enough so maybe harder to turn away from their acidic strike. They fired as well.
