Med Bay: Part Two

With the end of Quarantine, all of the patients who'd been kept in the bubbles had been released (with the exception of those that Medical felt weren't safe to release), and brought back to the Med Bay proper. Some of them might leave, with family or friends to look after them, but others might remain in the Med Bay. Others still were only just arriving, their loss of time not discovered until after Quarantine had ended.

But regardless of whether the affected were staying in the Med Bay or leaving, until this crisis was solved, Medical would continue to check up on the them.

[[ooc: Just make whatever threads you'd like to have set in med bay guys, and feel free to use this post for all Med Bay stuff for the rest of the plot. Just make sure to mark whether your thread is open, closed, or just for a particular group of people, e.g. Medical staff]]

"How are we going to look after all those children?" Miranda asked, biting her lip. She wasn't very good at looking after kids! What if they all hated her?

She looked no at her own cards - no matches. "Um...am I meant to ask first?" she said, worrying. They'd only just started, and already Miranda couldn't help but fear that she wasn't going to be very good at this.

"Like you look after any sick children, as the situation requires." He nodded. "Meeting his mother, well...it wouldn't be too far of a stretch thinking that his brain just couldn't handle it and blocked it. Though hopefully he'll remember that when we fix them. I don't know that there are any rules, if there are, no one informed me. I guess our best bet is just to try to keep track of them."

He smiled faintly. "Miranda, you can ask first. Just pick a card you have and as Sakura or I for matching cards, got it?"

"Mmmhmm." Sakura nodded, shooting Miranda a sympathetic look. Sakura didn't have to deal with gaggles of children at any given time, but she had worked with kids in different capacities. Her difficulty was in drawing the line between expectations for the children of her village, and expectations of children from anywhere else. She'd never thought she'd actually have to make that distinction. She hadn't really realized it was a differentiation worth making.

Call it ignorance, or willing blindness. In a way, it had been both.

"He seemed all right with her when they were reunited." It was a factual statement, and something she'd only paid enough attention to in order to be ready for stress reactions. Or denial. They'd left together, and as far as she was concerned, that had been for the best. "Though that brings up the fact most people here don't have that kind of fall back. Lost, confused kids among relative strangers, if they start forgetting who any of us are." She frowned, concerned all over again.

But she shook that off and did her best to smile. Obsessing over it now would change nothing. Projecting futures that hadn't happened yet wouldn't better prepare her, just distract her. Time to wait for Miranda's call in this game of Go Fish!

Miranda hadn't had much experience with Marco herself - she'd been helping Rory with some of the other patients instead - so she was rather out of the loop on this particular patient. "Why would he block out memories of his own mother?" she asked, confused. "Surely he'd have always remembered her?"

She looked down at her cards, biting her lip. She needed to pick a card that one of the others might have, but how would she be able to guess the right one? "Um...do you have a five?" she asked Rory, making a wild stab in the dark.

"So the memory reversal passed the point that they were enemies? Good, I'm happy for them both." He nodded. "That's the major problem, to many of them we'll look like kidnappers. People who took them away from their parents and dumped them in a strange and scary place where nothing at all makes sense. And some of them have abilities that make them even harder to deal with than normal children. Sick kids are unpredictable anyway, and normally they can at least remember how they got there."

He sighed faintly at the question. "Near as I can tell? At some point she was on the other side of something he was involved in, and he considered her his enemy." He glanced at Sakura for comformation, she'd had better luck with Marco - and likely, Eva - than he had.

"Ah, uh...no. Go fish." Three twos, a four and a Jack. But no fives.

"So am I," she agreed, frowning again at the thought of so many kids being disorientated. "Had you run into anyone completely forgetting about the ship and how they ended up here?"

She was distracted from her own line of questioning, thinking about how to deal with kids blessed with abilities that made them difficult to keep track of, when Rory turned Miranda's question back around to her. All in a glance, but it was there for answering nonetheless. "Yes, but you're looking at something from later in his life. Right now -- or right then," she amended her statement, "He believed his mother had been dead for some time. Blocking out memories that she was alive here on ship was probably his way of making it make sense." Or not getting his hopes up. Or any of the other possibilities she had briefly considered.

Sakura looked down at her cards. She still had the pair of nines, along with a three, four, and a funny faced card. Well, if the point was to ask for the cards someone else might have, fives were right out. She'd have to keep in mind that Miranda had asked for them if she ended up pulling one from the center stack. "My turn?" she asked, looking over to Rory. "Do you have any of the female crown cards?"

"His thought his mother had died? And...then she became his enemy?" Miranda asked, concerned. Particularly since in her world, returning from the dead was never a good thing. "How was she an enemy? Was...was she an akuma? Was her soul used to animate a killing machine?"

From talking to other people, Miranda had gotten the impression that akuma only existed in her world. But who knew what existed on other worlds? Maybe some of them had akuma too...or things like akume.

"She did become his enemy. I went to find her to get a medical history, since he was less than willing to offer anything up. Something to do with the space-parasites, they've had a couple run ins with them on this ship. She must have been infected."

He nodded, looking at his cards. "No, go fish. Do you have any Jacks, Sakura?"

He settled a bit better. "I haven't had anyone forget completely yet. Though some seem prone to forgetting how they fit. As the memories slip further away and start making less sense, who's to say that they won't?"

"Nothing, really. I think the interviews showed people were slipping up with connecting to their place and past on ship already." She frowned, pressing her lips together tightly.

Of course, hearing Rory's question, she looked up and blinked away some of that intensity. "That depends. What does a Jack look like?" But since he hadn't said yes to the female crown card, she doubted she had it. "I think you'll have to go fish."

As to the rest -- "The're called Yeerks," Sakura supplied, if she didn't say anything more. Too much she didn't know on the subject still. They weren't native to Earth, however, if they were space parasites. Lovely.
aaaiiiieeeeeeeeeeeee: (PANIC!)

[personal profile] aaaiiiieeeeeeeeeeeee 2011-06-09 11:56 am (UTC)(link)
"Space parasites?!" Miranda squealed, recoiling. "Oh god, we're in space! Does that mean we might get infested?!" Miranda looked around nervously, as if space parasites might leap out at her from behind the corner at any moment...

And technically, it was her go and she should be asking for a card - except she'd gotten a little too distracted by the newfound terror of lurking space parasites.
theboywhowaits: (Doubtful Rory)

[personal profile] theboywhowaits 2011-06-09 01:06 pm (UTC)(link)
"Calm down, they apparently ran them off. It's one of the reasons we have physicals now, so we can make certian that no one is infested or carrying something that might take a sudden turn against the ship. Nothing will get you in the medbay."

He nodded. "Ship memories stop meshing up with the ship, say you've made a best friend here and at home you didn't have any, your brain might shut it out because you were defined by the fact that you didn't have friends at home. Does that make sense? The brain is odd at repressing things sometimes. Hopefully we won't have to deal with it, but I wouldn't be shocked if we did. and ah, there should be a J. Where the number would be, I took the Jokers out, so their should definitely be a J, if that helps, the Queens have a Q and the Kings have a K and the Aces have an A. Does that help?"

"You're fine, Miranda." She might personally not agree that nothing will get her in the medbay, but she was hardly going to argue the point. "You don't need to be worried about space parasites, just like Rory says." Sakura smiled as reassuringly as she could manage.

She wasn't sure if Rory had been stating the clarification for her, or for Miranda. Either way, she nodded again. "Complete ship repressions would be a lot to deal with." Something that bore thinking about, planning for just in case.

Sakura sighed, looking down at her cards. "Ah, yes, it does. I think it's your turn to ask, Miranda."
aaaiiiieeeeeeeeeeeee: (Worried)

[personal profile] aaaiiiieeeeeeeeeeeee 2011-06-13 05:10 am (UTC)(link)
"But what if one of them comes in for a physical, and they don't want to be found out? They might attack!" And if they were anything like akuma, their attacks could be formidable indeed...

"I...um, do you have a seven?" Miranda asked Sakura blindly, just looking down at her cards and saying the first one that caught her eye.
theboywhowaits: (Doubtful Rory)

[personal profile] theboywhowaits 2011-06-13 06:51 am (UTC)(link)
"If they come in for physical, they'll be scanned and we'll know they're there. That's the point of a physical. And Stacy won't let them attack us. I promise, I've looked at the base biology. They can't hurt you. Their powers are based on what their host's possess, and the ones on the ship just have normal humans."

He nodded, quietly supporting the statement. "Not something to be looked forward to. I hope they lose their powers as they go back through puberty."
encourage: (⇒ surprised I hadn't thought of that)

Miranda was lucky. Sakura had drawn a seven with her go fish from Rory. "One seven," she said, picking the card out of her hand and handing it over to her fellow worker. "Trust Rory. He knows what he's talking about. Besides, we're all here to watch out for each other. On top of the ship herself, what else can you ask for as a guarantee?" She was sincere in her belief, at the least.

If Rory's statement about puberty struck her as oddly out of place. "People have powers that only activated during puberty?" Talk about making things even more awkward.
aaaiiiieeeeeeeeeeeee: (Nervous)

[personal profile] aaaiiiieeeeeeeeeeeee 2011-06-13 08:54 am (UTC)(link)
Oh! Miranda had a pair! She placed the two sevens down, inadvertently flashing her cards in the process.

"Then they're just like...normal humans?" Miranda asked, feeling concerned. That made them sound more like akuma, not less. Except no powers? At all? And Rory's next statement had struck Miranda as odd, too... "Why would...um...you know..." (Miranda blushed red, oh god she couldn't believe that she was talking about puberty with a man...) "have anything to do with powers?"

[personal profile] theboywhowaits 2011-06-13 06:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Rory glanced at Sakura, quietly shaking his head.

"Have you got any twos, Sakura?"

He studied his cards, frowning faintly. "Just like normal humans. They could do about as much damage as a human, depending on the weapons they have. As far as I know, neither has done anything to hurt the ship." He glanced up, relaxed. It was a medical issue, not a personal one. "Ah, yeah. According to Dr. Hussain, because of the flood of hormones, many powers activate with the onset of puberty. Therefore, when some of them start aging bellow that marker, we might not have to worry about it anymore. It won't work in every instance, but I'll keep my fingers crossed."

"Go fish," she said, belatedly laying down a pair of nines. For some reason she'd thought she needed all four! His shake of the head kept her silent, even in response to the information on mutant abilities. At least she suspected it might be tied in, with how Faiza had asked Sakura if she was mutant months ago in the pod caverns.

Miranda looked down at her own cards and blinked. Oh! She had a two - but did that mean she should ask Rory for it? Or would that be rude? She bit her lip nervously. What she should do? If she didn't get more pairs, she would fail at the game, but if she went and asked for a two so soon after Rory had asked for one he and Sakura might be angry at her...

She darted a worried look at Rory. "I...um...I..." she said, so wracked by indecision that she ended up not deciding anything.
