She's Alive [Open]

Anyone wandering into the media library this morning would find a somewhat unfamiliar looking young woman (about eighteen, possibly nineteen) sitting in front of the equipment, head tilted back and eyes closed as she listened to some good, old-fashioned rock and roll. She looks fit, in excellent physical condition and seems cheerful enough. She has one leg folded over the opposite knee, toe tapping as she keeps time with the music. Yeah, she's discovered just how awesome music from twentieth century Earth is and she's enjoying it.

Give her a minute and she'll probably notice whoever wanders in after her.

She gives his hand a firm shake and then nods, gesturing at the seats, "Take a load off, make yourself home-like and stuff."

A shrug.

"Yeah, pretty much. Mostly been getting used to this place."

"Uh." Howard doesn't laugh. And yet he feels like saying 'actually, when I first met you you were a zombie' might be just a bit upsetting. "Well, you know, Stacy's a weird place. I mean, especially since we're fighting a war and all..."

He keeps a close eye on her face to see how she reacts to that. If her memory's messed up, he wonders how far back it goes.

Karis shrugs, "...I was in the army back home. Guess I'll be in the army here, too. Giant insects instead of orcs, though... Not like the greenskins were causing much trouble in the first place."

Ugh, Stacy-chairs.

He nods. "Have you tried joining a department? It might help if you're looking for something to do."

And take your mind of things. Like your world being destroyed.

Kang approved of the music very much. He'd heard some of it from Dean, and knew of it quite well from Fairplay. The woman, on the other hand, wasn't familiar - wait. Some of her features, and her scent, was familiar; she was a hell of a lot less... dead.

"Karis?"

"Kang!" Karis raises her hand in a lazy wave, "How's it going?"

"Thought about it. Toyed with engineering, maybe, but I'm mostly a grunt. Infantry back home, farmed before that. Not exactly the highest person on the totem pole, yeah?" She chuckles. "I'll do the fighting, everyone else can worry about the rest. Shit, I just want to get this finished so we can all go home."

"Yeah. Uh." He thinks, remembering the announcement he'd read, then discarded. Certainly it couldn't have happened to anyone he knew, right?

"Hey, I think we should get you over to the Medical Bay. You don't look so good. . ."

"You look..." Alive. "Different."

And, Karis wasn't using annoying nicknames. Kang sat down next to her, "I see you discovered Styx."

"I feel fine," Karis waves her hand dismissively. "Never better."

He raises an eyebrow. "So you do engineering in your spare time? If you ever do end up there, I have a friend who's trying to scrape together some materials from the department... Howard. I'd recommend getting what you can from him now; I suspect he's going to start charging in the future."

"You're a soldier? In what army?"

"Oh, yeah! Howie! I know him! Good guy," Karis nods, still lounging in the meatchair. The question gives her a pause as she eyes him. Curious guy. And then she puffs up a bit, obviously proud of whatever service it is she comes from.

"Lordaeron heavy infantry. Not the most glamorous, but I'm not a noble."

"Is it my hair?" Karis runs a hand through it with a little laugh. She seems so much more relaxed like this. Like she's not about to jump on someone and maul them to death.

"Hell, I discovered this music. Way better then some of the stuff we've got at home."

She gives him a little jab in the shoulder. "How're you doing, big guy?"

He tries to mesh that together with what he already knows about Karis. "Ever seen combat?"

"Not really. Unless you count training. Hasn't been a war in Lordaeron for about... I dunno, twenty years? Not since the orc invasion."

She cocks her head curiously, "Why?"

"Nothing. Just curious. You know me, too nosy for my own good." He relaxes, again, at least physically, though his mind's still racing trying to figure out what's happened to Karis and when she got so chipper. And young. And alive. "Did I tell you I almost got eaten by dinosaurs?"

"...when did that happen?"

Because she doesn't remember that.

"Good guy? Well, he's not bad, I guess." He really, really hoped Howard wasn't fleecing someone who appeared to be a perfectly nice young woman. "...we are talking about the same Howard, right?"

He didn't recognize the name, but she was clearly proud of her job. "Afraid I've never heard of Lordaeron, but apparently we'll be involved in plenty of fighting."

"A few days ago. Stacy sent me on a super secret mission and I almost got eaten by a velociraptor." He leans back and puts his feet on the table - both sneakers are blood-stained and, after going through many a wash cycle, battered, but one looks like it's been ravaged. There are large teethmarks in it. "Had to take a dive in a corpse trench to get away. I'm just glad there weren't any zombies."

He flicks a look up to her face to see if she's still unresponsive to that.

All it gets is a raised eyebrow and a concerned look, "Damn. Sounds like a hell of a time - least you made it out alright."

She looks puzzled for a moment, "Didn't you tell me you had trouble with the walking dead back home or something?"

"That's what I hear. Hate to be left out, I guess. Signed up for king and country and to see the world. Got a lot more then I bargained for with this trip, though," she groans and flops back.

"I just want my family to be OK. And yeah. Same Howard. Kinda rough around the edges, but whatever."

"I think we all got more than we bargained for, really. But so far, things aboard the ship have been less than eventful. I thought it would be like the situation back home, maybe worse."

Zouichi blinked. "There are an awful lot of pods on the ship. Maybe your family is in some of them."

Okay, yeah, at some point he had to talk to Howard about Karis. So far, Howard appeared to be living by his decision to leave his old life behind him, but...

It was a nice change, but it was strange at the same time. Kang had gotten used to Karis's usual attitude. "It is pretty good. Have you heard any of Foreigner's yet?"

The jab was a bit more familiar. "As good as can be. There's been a few... weird things happening around the ship." He paused. "Well, more weird than usual."

Concern is another emotion Howard's not all that used to seeing from Karis.

"Yeah. You didn't?" He could mention that their zombie was tied up in the basement, but even though he's not expecting Karis to start in on 'deader's rights' or whatever, who knows when the rest of her personality will come back?

"Hope so. Hate to think of 'em being popped back home when these damn bugs blew Azeroth into the Nether..."

She sighed and leaned forward, chin cupped in her hands.

"Where are you from, Zouichi?"
