Picard was sitting, watching television.

To be precise, he was watching episodes of Star Trek: The Next Generation. He remembered the Farpoint mission, remembered Q and his 'trial for humanity'. He only grew more sullen when he switched it ahead many episodes to First Contact with the Borg. He watched as a model of the Enterprise was bombarded with weapons fire, glaring when an actor dressed as him came on screen, pleading with Q to help him.

"It's entertainment to them," he said, his voice flat. "It's just entertainment to them."

"I suppose the best way to explain it is that to the people who watched it, enjoyed it, and were inspired it, is that it's their Shakespeare."

"I hardly think the exploits of myself and my crew make for tales of Shakespearean quality," Picard replied. "I'm sorry, I don't yet know the names of everyone on this crew. You are?"

"I'm the Middleman, and maybe not, but it's still the way those people see it."

"Well, then, Mister Middleman, it would seem that I've lost my temper, doubtlessly upset a young woman, and possibly shaken the faith of my crew in my abilities as commander, all apparently over a matter that, upon consideration, must seem trivial. What would your recommendations be?" One thing Picard could keep pride in: his self-deprecating humor.

"Apologizing to her, and explaining to the crew the reasons for why you lost your temper might be your best bet Captain."

"You're right, of course." Picard sighed, a rueful smile on his face as he rubbed one temple.

"What I wouldn't give to have Guinan here."
