Magical Theory 101 [Open]

The scene was set in a tropical paradise as Negi finished his lecture on magic. There was a small area dedicated to the teaching with a chalkboard displaying Jack Rakan's Ridiculous Chart O'Power present as well.

"As such, magic power is channeled through the user and created into fire, darkness, ice, etc. Those who are beginning can take up a practice wand and use the chant Practi biginaru Ardescat as the first focus. When you learn to generate flames on a consistent basis, come talk to me for your next lesson."

Negi pushed his glasses up a little. "Those who need to test artifacts, or conversely create one please follow me to the fighting area. We'll continue the lesson. And as always, if you want to test a few spells, be my guest. Just keep the targets to the designated areas."

(ooc: mingle and learn with people, it's all good! You can make a thread or ask Negi directly about a spell or something.)

Before, when Negi had initially started this up, she had jokingly decided to use this opportunity as a way of moving in on Mr. cute and red headed. But as she started to actually research this stuff, not to mention her recent talk with Rein, she was starting to see that magic was not only going to be a powerful ally, it would be a subject she needed to throw herself into, just as she did in the arena of ass kicking. That meant not only focusing for an ungodly amount of time, it meant shutting herself away from her usual creeping around the ship and practicing LATIN of all things, so the pronunciation worked out right.

As she had told Rein earlier, she was a New Yorker: she adapted. There was a card that was a barrier jacket in her pocket, one she intended to ask Mr. cutie with glasses about, but for now it was concentrating on that spell. She stared at the wand in her hand a moment, far from her initial embarrassment at first on having it, and said the chant in her head first.

Practi biginaru Ardescat. Practi biginaru Ardescat. PractibiginaruArdescat...

"Practi biginaru Ardescat!" She chanted, and to her joy, flames came from the wand. This was far better than yesterday, where in frustration she had accidentally set a pod bed on fire chanting it in her sleep, hand still in the wand.

"Hey Negs, check it out!" She said, grinning. She was in her uniform of course, only vaguely realizing how much she stood out. Whatever, she had work to accomplish.

Quite legitimately concerned about the sensoriums, Lupin had spent entirely too long fretting nervously about the consequences of entering them, pacing and pondering. Eventually, however, only his conviction that he would sense any stress on his body, and his imaginings of what James or Sirius might say to see him cowering like this, impelled him to enter.

He did so with his eyes shut and his every sense attuned to any sign of excitability or unnatural energy in himself. When he felt nothing, he dared to open his eyes.

"Well. This is certainly impressive."

"So I did, and I'm beginning to wonder how an old man like me was chosen," Lupin said with evident amusement. "I seem to be a decade or so over the average age of this ship at best."

He looked around the sensorium again, attempting to detect any sign that it was a created image, an illusion, rather than reality. He could find none. Only his mental certainty that this was such an illusion prevented his total belief. "A most impressive place."

"Concentrations such as that usually only damage Muggle technology, on my world." Curious, Lupin produced his omnicomm to observe the effects that this magical saturation had on it. Noting that it still functioned, he replaced it in a pocket with a mild shrug. "But then, we knew already that our magical techniques differed in that respect. I'm quite curious to see yours."

She nodded, not ready to congratulate herself. This was just a small step, however positive. There was still a lot more she had to do.

"What other choice did I have? I won't get better by trying it out just today. I've never even thought magic possible until a few weeks ago, so I have a lot to catch up on. I mean, you're a prodigy or whatever, but you didn't get there by sitting on your thumbs, right?"

[identity profile] hit-girl-mindy.livejournal.com 2011-01-13 06:15 pm (UTC)(link)
She thought as much: anything that came out that good needed a lot of practice. She had the scars herself to prove it. At his instruction though, she looked at want, closed her eyes and concentrated.

Practi biginaru ventus. Practi biginaru ventus. Practibiginaruventus

"Practi biginaru ventus." This wasn't as impressive, but a small air current passed over them.

[identity profile] hit-girl-mindy.livejournal.com 2011-01-13 06:28 pm (UTC)(link)
"The wand movement huh?" Well that was new. She didn't think that it would matter, but she figured better to try it his way. She closed her eyes and concentrated again, but this time thought of the way air might move. It sounded almost new agey, but made sense to think of it as a different element, all around them.

"Practi biginaru Ventus," she said, and a sharp air draft knocked her off her feet. Despite it knocking her wig askew, she adjusted it, grinning.

"Sweet."

Now this, she was certain she could do. There was a lot of magic she was sure would be difficult, how could it not be? It was all new. The moment Negi had mentioned something with an arrow though, she had the feeling she could get it right. An arrow essentially boiled down to accuracy, and she had a very long history of getting that down before she even had a fight.

So she closed her eyes and let her thoughts float away, including the one barking at her about common sense when it came to hitting something. This was all about making her mark, and she needed concentration. In her mind's eye, she saw the cans, and she imagined the impact it would need to make.

Ok.

She brought her hands down and thrust dead center, her eyes focused.

"Practi Biginaru: Saggiita Magica Dos Lucis!"

Two beams went straight to the center and impaled with such a force the other cans were knocked aside. Hit Girl never hit lightly unless it was necessary.

"Hogwarts was much like that, but accomplished entirely without technology." Lupin had no real idea his explanation was unnecessary. "Perhaps our magic has an advantage there; it is quite easily to make a building Unplottable, shielded to repel Muggles, and so forth. Of course, we rarely do so on entire cities... most all-wizard communities are not as large as one, more like towns and so forth."

[identity profile] myboggartismoon.livejournal.com 2011-01-13 08:33 pm (UTC)(link)
"We use much the same system, in fact." Lupin smiled at this congruence. "I suppose distractions such as that are the most sensible way anywhere."

Out of a sense of prudence more than anything, he drew his own wand, but held it by his side. Mr. Springfield seemed quite trustworthy, but Lupin knew he personally could always react in a way that he ought not to have, in which case he would want his wand to correct his own error.

Hit Girl waited until he had set everything up again. She stretched a little, and started down the line, reciting the spells and taking down the targets little by little, waiting for Negi to set them up, and then taking them down again. Negi likely hadn't realized it she was Mindy, and after that encounter with Asuna she was looking at something to work out her frustrations on.

Finally she ended up at "Undetriginta spiritus lucis. Sagitta Magica, Series Lucis: 29 spirits of light. Magic Archer, Barrage of 29 Light Arrows," taking down the last row again. She wiped her brow: this took more energy than she'd thought.

Oh good. She wouldn't have liked to admit it, but she felt like she was about to keel over at the moment. As it was, she was starting to feel a little hungry. Sh had no idea how long they'd been here practicing.

She grinned back. "Hey, what can I say? When I have a dedicated teacher I get jazzed up about it. I look forward to the next part."

She stretched. "So what made you decide to become a mage anyway? Seems like a lot of work."

Hit Girl hadn't expected to hear something like that: if anything, with the way Negi acted, she would have figured that he was a mama's boy. But he not only hadn't mentioned his mom, his dad seemed like some far off character. She also hadn't realized that his strength had been brought about in part by his dad to begin with. There was a little similarity there.

What she'd also remembered, though, was that Rein said his mom had been podded again, and that he had grown up not being too happy. Of course she couldn't offer any encouraging words (that was Mindy's bag), but she could still talk with him about stuff, right?

"That's a pretty impressive staff," she said, examining it with her eyes. She didn't know how he might react if she touched it. "So you're a prodigy because of your dad huh? That's something we have in common: I'm what I am because of my dad. Have you ever found yours?"
