Meet N' Greet

Part of the crew might be gone, but life on the ship goes on. In fact, new people have woken up and, eventually, they've been spat out into the mess hall.

Maybe it's better to introduce them to some of the worst aspects of ship life first, right?

Anyway, the word is out that there's new people, and someone should probably go say hello. Before the n00bs mistake the glop for crew.

"Nah. He's just a murderous prick. They gave us AIs to try and improve us-faster, stronger...meaner...."

She pauses to stare at Kelly. "Not exactly? Church is my ex-boyfriend. And O'Malley...well, now that Tucker's alien kid's probably blown up, I think I'm going to go back to trying to kill him."

"I don't see the point in trying to improve an already augmented SPARTAN. Especially with a murderous AI. We're quite capable of taking care of that sort of business by ourselves."

Kelly sort of shrugs. "Ex-Boyfriend, huh? Your AI is no longer in your possession?" Let's just ignore that bit about Tuecker's alien kid, yeah?

"This was Project Freelancer. It worked...for awhile."

Tex nods at the questions. "O'Malley jumped ship right before I went to attack the Reds." She pauses. "Long story. Long, stupid story."

"Project Freelancer? I haven't heard anything about that. What was it's objective?"

Kelly really has no idea what you are talking about, Tex. "Reds?" That's really all she can think of to say.

"To see how well the AI thing worked-and to win the war."

Tex sighs-if her hologram could do an eyeroll, that's what she'd be doing. "The Reds," she grumbles, obviously not recalling a fond memory. "I got hired to replace a dead guy-who turned out to be Church-in this box canyon in the middle of nowhere. All that was there? The Reds and the Blues, fighting over their damn flags. ...when they bothered to do anything, anyway."

"How well did it work? Doesn't seem like it went too well judging by what you told me."

Holograms can't do eyerolls? Déjà always pulled them off so well. "Reds and Blues? This makes no sense to me." There, she went and said it. Happy now, Tex?

"Yeah, once people started going crazy things went downhill. They started removing AIs, and some of them didn't like the idea very much. It's another long story." Tex has a lot of those.

And her helmet, alas, gets in the way of having an visible eyes. "Don't expect it to. The whole thing was kind of...stupid."

"I guess that's generally what happens when people go crazy. Removing AIs? Who didn't like that idea very much?"

That's probably an issue. "It sounds like it."

"The AIs-and some of the agents." York would've killed anybody who made at attempt at removing Delta, she was pretty sure of that.

"Trust me. It was really, really stupid."

She nods. "I can see how that would put a kink in any plans there were for the program." Kelly would probably have done the same if she'd had an AI like John did.

"I'll take your word for it." Crazy AIs indeed.

"Yeah. Wouldn't be surprised if they were trying another version of it, though."

"Knowing the UNSC, neither would I."

"Yeah." Tex pauses, then offers, "Tex. Who're you?"

She would hold out a hand, but seeing as how she's a hologram. "SPARTAN-087. Or Kelly if you like."

"I think I'm gonna go with Kelly." She pauses again. "Kinda weird hearing people get called by their first names again."

"Last name Preston. No one uses that these days." She shrugs. "I don't much care either way."

"I'm just used to last names and agent names. ...Or just swearing at people. Usually works pretty well at getting their attention."

"I know the feeling." She smirks slightly. "That's a good point. Doesn't always raise morale though."

"...Your group actually cared about morale?"

"UNSC Navy. What with the Covenant handing us our asses more than half the time, morale was always a worry."

Tex shrugs. "We just kinda left morale up to ourselves. ...I think being away from each other was actually a morale booster."

There's a long moment's pause. "What kind of army were you?"

"Technically, I'm not Red or Blue army. I was just hired by the Blues after Caboose shot Church. But in Blood Gulch? It wasn't so much armies as a couple people who were still alive despite themselves."

"Honestly? I'm not sure who to blame for the whole Red vs. Blue thing. The more you try to find out, the bigger the headache gets."
