Meet N' Greet

Part of the crew might be gone, but life on the ship goes on. In fact, new people have woken up and, eventually, they've been spat out into the mess hall.

Maybe it's better to introduce them to some of the worst aspects of ship life first, right?

Anyway, the word is out that there's new people, and someone should probably go say hello. Before the n00bs mistake the glop for crew.

Sitting gingerly at one of the tables (or...table-like growths, he guessed), Jamie stared down at the unappetizing serving of glop the ship had spat out for him. It looked like vomit and didn't smell much better; was this actually supposed to be food?

Meh. He didn't have much of an appetite anyway. Pushing the substance away, he propped his chin in one hand, idly rubbing at that arm with his other hand - that ticklish, skittery feeling underneath the suit was going to take some getting used to, he was sure - and stared out at the rest of the room. Lotta other people, some looking a little more...unique than others; a dog, a wolf. All supposedly here for Stacy's "higher purpose," or whatever line she'd fed them.

Jamie sighed. It felt childish and counterproductive, moping like this right off the bat, but he couldn't help it; he was starting to feel the loss of his friends back on the island, some more keenly than others.

"Let me guess." Brenda says, swinging herself down on the bench across from him. "You're thinking 'there's no freaking way that slop is supposed to be food'?"

[identity profile] riseupnchargem.livejournal.com 2009-06-04 09:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Startled out of his brooding, Jamie glances over at the redhead now sharing a table...growth...thing with him. He half-grins a little hesitantly at her comment, more out of social propriety than genuine mirth. "Uh. Among other things, yeah. Pretty...unappetizing stuff."

[identity profile] shes-intense.livejournal.com 2009-06-04 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
"Yeah, it's like that. Wish I could tell you where they store the good stuff but I don't even know." She holds out her hand. "I'm Brenda."

[identity profile] riseupnchargem.livejournal.com 2009-06-04 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Jamie reaches across to shake the offered hand, that small, polite smile firmly in place. "Jamie Hemeros. Nice to meet you."

He drums his fingers idly on the table, pausing at the skin-on-bare-skin noise this generates, and fidgets a bit. "So, uh...how long've you been here?"

[identity profile] shes-intense.livejournal.com 2009-06-05 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
"Not very long, a few weeks if that. Time is kind of weird here." Along with, uh, EVERYTHING ELSE.

"Sorry I can't tell you a lot. What's it like where you're from?"

[identity profile] riseupnchargem.livejournal.com 2009-06-05 03:00 am (UTC)(link)
Well, that sort of depends. Jamie chews his lip a little in thought.

"Um. Well, originally I'm from Zi - that's a planet on the edges of the Milky Way, humans settled there a few hundred years ago or so. We've got, uh, Zoids...giant combat mechs shaped like animals. Used to use 'em in wars, but the time period I'm from we just have...mock-battles. Tournament matches for money and stuff." Drums his fingers on the tabletop again. Again, pauses, with a slight frown.

"And then about three years ago I got sucked into a desert in another dimension somewhere, and after a year there I wound up on a tropical island. Also in another dimension. Where there were a bunch of people from other worlds and stuff, kinda like here."

That about sums it up, in a nutshell. He lifts one shoulder in a shrug and offers another half-grin, looking either nervous or sheepish. "So. What about you? Where're you from?"

[identity profile] shes-intense.livejournal.com 2009-06-06 09:27 pm (UTC)(link)
And Brenda officially feels she's been trumped for EVER complaining about her life and how weird it is.

"Uuh... I'm from Earth. It's a planet in the Milky Way too, pretty far out there. A lot of people here seem to come from different versions of Earth but on my Earth we have superheroes - people with special powers and technologies and things that defend regular people and keep a handle on the super people who decide to do bad things with all their power."

She smiles sheepishly. "One of my best friends is a hero called the Blue Beetle and I sort of get to tag along on a lot of the stuff he does. Or a did, but now I'm here. This is only my SECOND time being transported to a strange place though so I think you've got me trumped on dimension-hopping experience."

[identity profile] riseupnchargem.livejournal.com 2009-06-07 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
Jamie nods. "Most of the people back on the island came from Earth, too. Different versions and everything. And there were a lot of people there with powers...there was, uh...this lady who guarded the gates of time, people who could control the wind, a guy that could move stuff with his mind...one of the guys there could, like, change what stuff looked like just by thinking about it. It was..." Bizarre? Frightening? Insanity-inducing? He lifts one shoulder in a shrug and settles on, "...interesting."

The cautious half-grin returns and he adds, "Yeah, guess I'm adding up the frequent flier miles on the whole 'going to other dimensions' thing." Not that he's particularly pleased to have this distinction. "What kind of place did you end up in last time you went?"

[identity profile] shes-intense.livejournal.com 2009-06-08 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
"Uuuh, this weird other planet with crazy little monkey-ish things that tried to sacrifice me and drink my blood. It wasn't awesome, but thankfully I wasn't there long."

She smiles sheepishly. "But... we're all working at getting ourselves back to where we came from so hopefully when we figure it out we'll be able to send you back to wherever you WANT to go home to. Hopefully."

[identity profile] riseupnchargem.livejournal.com 2009-06-08 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
...uh. Yeah, that sounds considerably more unpleasant than anything he'd ever gone through in the desert or on the island.

He frowns a little at the second half of the comment, thoughtfully. "D'you know why we're here? I mean anything more specific than carrying out that 'great purpose' Stacy mentioned?" He kind of doubts it, if Stacy's as vague and unhelpful to everyone as she was to Jamie, but it doesn't hurt to ask, he figures.
