Meet N' Greet

Part of the crew might be gone, but life on the ship goes on. In fact, new people have woken up and, eventually, they've been spat out into the mess hall.

Maybe it's better to introduce them to some of the worst aspects of ship life first, right?

Anyway, the word is out that there's new people, and someone should probably go say hello. Before the n00bs mistake the glop for crew.

Rei sits somewhere nearby, gesturing with her arm at the decor. "All of this is part of Stacy, our abductor and boss rolled into one. Right now you're looking at the mess hall, in the business of serving the blandest food in the universe." She suspects that Stacy is listening. She doesn't care. Complaining might not help the situation, but it definitely improves her mood a little.

"We've been sliding out of those pods the same way you did for a while now, and a huge crew's formed. I'd guess there's over a hundred of us. Half of our crew just got sent down to an alien world. They're supposed to grab pods that Stacy left down there, and we're camped up here waiting for them. It probably won't be long before we'll be risking our necks on missions too."

"Oh," is all she had to say. Honestly what was she expecting after waking up naked in those pod and being manhandled by tentacles she was starting to think things weren't exactly the most normal around here. She thinks about her entire situation. It isn't the most pleasant, but she guesses she'll make the most of it.

"Well, I guess it's better to light a candle than to curse the darkness," she just says to herself.

"Yeah, it's like that." She sighs quietly. "The people fighting the unknown down there probably know more about all this than I do. Typical Stacy, sending you guys out when this is happening."

The proverb causes her to smile a little. "Right. Even if you don't like what you find in the candlelight, I think it's scarier not knowing or ignoring what you're dealing with. And we've done a few things to make things better. There's a place called the Sensoriums that can trick your mind into believing it's anywhere. Some of us have been taking their meals there, and it tricks you into believing that this sludge is real food. I don't eat in there, but I can show you where it is if you want to try it."

Rei adds one more thing she hopes Mei Ling might like. "There's also a library if you'd like to read. It has books gathered in its computers from all over the universe, and it translates them all for us."

[identity profile] savin-ur-data.livejournal.com 2009-06-02 10:54 pm (UTC)(link)
That did the trick, Mei Ling dons her much more usual facial expression, smiling back at Rei. She always automatically appreciates someone who can figure out a proverb on their own.

She nods, "Thank you. I don't need to know right now, but if you get the time it would be appreciated."

Her face lights up at the mention of a library, "Really? That's wonderful." If nothing else, she could always retreat back into her books.

"Yes. Most of the engineers hang out there to figure out their inventions, but I'm more interested in the literature from different cultures. When I'm off-duty, I'm usually downloading books. I can show you there too."

She groans a little. "Speaking of duty, we're going to have to cram you all into the command structure when the others return. I'm just your average foot soldier, but we have medical staff, engineers, trainers, and a few other groups. The belief is that everyone here was chosen for a reason."

[identity profile] savin-ur-data.livejournal.com 2009-06-03 09:23 pm (UTC)(link)
She claps her hands together excitedly. Engineers? World literature? Sign her up!

"Oh, yes! That is great," when one door closes, another opens Mei Ling supposes. Honestly, ignoring the whole part about being ripped from her home and her previous life, things on the ship was looking pretty good.

"Hm." Foot soldier did not sound appealing to her, there was a reason she gave up her dream of being a combat pilot. "I'm more of a telecommunications specialist than a soldier myself. I'm sure I could be useful somehow." She smiles.

"I'm sure the engineers will be interested in meeting with you when they return. Three of them recently developed a communications system that telepathically transmits speech. It has a great range---galaxy-sized, maybe? I'm sure you can ask them when they return. They'd probably like your input on improvements or developing new things."

Rei bows politely to her, a slight smile on her face. "Oh, by the way, I'm Rei Hino. It's an honor to meet you."

"Ah, really?" She's trying to hide her excitement. She really is, but she's sort of... failing. That just sounds so amazing. "I would be very happy to talk with them!"

She nods back, "Mei Ling and likewise."

[identity profile] firesoul-lol.livejournal.com 2009-06-05 10:25 pm (UTC)(link)
"It shouldn't be long before they return." Rei smiles back, just slightly. Mei Ling's enthusiasm is surprisingly infectious.

Her spirits lifted, the younger girl sits up. "That's about all I can think to tell you, unless you have other questions. Do you want to see some of the ship, or try to eat first?"

[identity profile] savin-ur-data.livejournal.com 2009-06-08 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
"I think..." Mei Ling takes a look at the food around her in the mess hall, between that and Rei's warning, the decision isn't hard.

"I'd like to look around the ship first, thank you."
