Meet N' Greet

Part of the crew might be gone, but life on the ship goes on. In fact, new people have woken up and, eventually, they've been spat out into the mess hall.

Maybe it's better to introduce them to some of the worst aspects of ship life first, right?

Anyway, the word is out that there's new people, and someone should probably go say hello. Before the n00bs mistake the glop for crew.

"Earth. Where else?" A pause. "Or around the colonies anyway. Where have you been hiding all these years?"

"I'll be sure to make a note of that." Doomsday devices, seriously. The only thought running through Kelly's head right now is what kind of freak boat she landed herself on.

[identity profile] madeofwyn.livejournal.com 2009-06-02 06:38 pm (UTC)(link)
"... wait, since when do India and the West Indies have space programs?" Wyn asks, seriously confused at this point. Those were the only colonies she knew about, since the British Empire hasn't exactly collapsed at this point in Wyn's universe.

[identity profile] unsc-rabbit.livejournal.com 2009-06-02 06:57 pm (UTC)(link)
"Space colonies... whole planets colonized to support the human race." A pause. "You don't know about these?"

[identity profile] madeofwyn.livejournal.com 2009-06-02 07:05 pm (UTC)(link)
"Um, should I?" Wyn blinks. "At this point, unless the government is much more competent at keeping secrets than I think they are, the closest thing to a colony in space we've got is the International Space Station." Which isn't very colony-like at all, it must be said.

[identity profile] unsc-rabbit.livejournal.com 2009-06-02 07:06 pm (UTC)(link)
A pause. "What year is it?"

[identity profile] madeofwyn.livejournal.com 2009-06-02 07:13 pm (UTC)(link)
"I'm from 2009." Blink blink.

"... this means you're from the future, doesn't it?" she says slowly, realization dawning.

[identity profile] unsc-rabbit.livejournal.com 2009-06-02 07:19 pm (UTC)(link)
"2552." She says with a sigh. "I didn't think it was possible. But I suppose it helps make more sense of things."

[identity profile] madeofwyn.livejournal.com 2009-06-02 07:25 pm (UTC)(link)
"Oh, cool, you are from the future!" Wyn says, bouncing a little in her seat.

"What, time travel?" Wyn asks, cheering up considerably. Finally, something she knows about. "It's possible, but... well, it's kind of illegal." Magic makes lots of things possible, but just because something's possible doesn't make it a good idea.

[identity profile] unsc-rabbit.livejournal.com 2009-06-03 09:47 am (UTC)(link)
"I suppose. That seems like an oversimplification though." Kelly raises a brow at the woman.

"Yes." A pause. "Illegal? As far as I was aware time travel was not even feasable. Let alone of enough import to warrant a legal ststus." This makes absolutely no sense whatsoever to Kelly.

[identity profile] madeofwyn.livejournal.com 2009-06-03 12:56 pm (UTC)(link)
"Probably." Wyn says breezily, completely ignoring the eyebrow-raise. "My brain's still trying to process the idea of 'being on a spaceship that's alive', so right now oversimplifications are fantastic."

Wyn blinks at that. "... wait, they 'lost' all the temporal-shifting spells? That's an easy way to keep people from doing it, I suppose." she says thoughtfully. "And changing the past is really what's illegal, especially since this one mad scientist tried to go back in time and make it so that he was dictator of the world after World War II. It didn't work out so well, but the effects on the timestream and all that just made it easier to outlaw it."

[identity profile] unsc-rabbit.livejournal.com 2009-06-03 01:17 pm (UTC)(link)
That gets a tight smile from the SPARTAN, everyone has their own coping mechanisms after all. "If one isn't accustomed to such things I can understand how it would be a shock. The fact that it is an organic ship does add to the strangeness."

Kelly just has to blink in return. "Spells? As in magic? As far as I know, magic is not real where and when I come from." That gets a nod. "I can imagine that such actions would have a great effect on the timestream. One misplaced bullet could stop a person from ever having existed for example."

Though if it were up to her? She would totally go back in time and find the Covenant homeworld and blow it up.

[identity profile] madeofwyn.livejournal.com 2009-06-03 03:52 pm (UTC)(link)
"Yeah, space is a bit- oh, right, I'm Wyn. Nice to meet you." Wyn says belatedly, only just remembering to introduce herself.

Wyn nods. "Yeah, as in magic, which is a huge giant pain in the ass for normal people." Her tone of voice is affectionate, though, as she does kind of go to magical university and she appreciates the lack of boredom. "I'm guessing that means you're from an alternate future, then."

[identity profile] unsc-rabbit.livejournal.com 2009-06-03 04:09 pm (UTC)(link)
She offers her hand, it's only polite after all. "Kelly. Good to meet you too."

"I imagine it would be. Though I suppose it would have its practical applications as well." That gets a nod, Kelly likes learning new things. "I suppose that's how it is. Things don't sound very similar after all."

[identity profile] madeofwyn.livejournal.com 2009-06-03 04:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Wyn takes the offered hand. She's a five-foot-nothing, a hundred-and-nothing easily-crushed college student... please don't crush, Kelly?

"It's not that common, which cuts down on the usefulness. I go to uni with... it's got to be about 1000 sorcery students, and St. Andrews is the only university in the Empire with a sorcery school. There just aren't enough people with the aptitude for it to make a huge difference." Wyn says with a shrug, trying to explain it as best she can; this really isn't her area of expertise.

[identity profile] unsc-rabbit.livejournal.com 2009-06-03 04:43 pm (UTC)(link)
At six-eight and a hundred-and-ten kilos Kelly could easily crush the girl if she wanted to. But no, she actually finds her interesting even if she doesn't exactly like her yet. The grip is firm and the eyes that rest above the scars on her face are friendly.

That gets a nod. "A specialist school then." Kelly knows just what it's like to be trained like that. "Well, maybe not entirely viable now with the lack of personnel but it sounds like in a few years there'll be a new workforce"

[identity profile] madeofwyn.livejournal.com 2009-06-03 05:16 pm (UTC)(link)
"Well, no it-- actually, if you look at it that way, I guess it is a specialist school." Wyn says, one hand behind her neck. "Admittedly, it specializes in making sure that nobody accidentally explodes the timestream or calls down Cthulhu or something like that."

[identity profile] unsc-rabbit.livejournal.com 2009-06-03 05:21 pm (UTC)(link)
"I suppose monitoring the people who use magic is just as prudent as anything else. It could be dangerous after all."

[identity profile] madeofwyn.livejournal.com 2009-06-03 05:35 pm (UTC)(link)
"That would be the government's theory." Wyn says brightly, a slight edge coming into her voice. "Especially if you're Irish."

[identity profile] unsc-rabbit.livejournal.com 2009-06-03 05:38 pm (UTC)(link)
"Well, the earlier years weren't well known for their tolerance. Especially in the trivial things like race." Not that she knows all too much about that. Most of her life was spent learning how to kill things.

[identity profile] madeofwyn.livejournal.com 2009-06-03 05:50 pm (UTC)(link)
"It's not so much intolerance as the Crown government deciding 'hey, we decided that we don't like the idea of you being independent, Ireland, so we're going to occupy you for a while until you calm down', which promptly caused an actual rebellion, because people are predictable, which didn't work because the government was better-armed." Wyn is not exactly the most impartial observer, mostly because a: she wasn't alive during most of it and b: she's Irish.

[identity profile] unsc-rabbit.livejournal.com 2009-06-03 06:03 pm (UTC)(link)
"That's how things play out a lot of the time. There were rebellions when people decided that they didn't like the way the UNSC ran things. A lot of people died for no reason. Sometimes the best thing to do is just to sit quiet and wait for your enemy to kill themselves through stupidity." Kelly...well. Kelly just likes to hit things to be honest.

[identity profile] madeofwyn.livejournal.com 2009-06-03 06:18 pm (UTC)(link)
"... well, nationalism and fighting smart haven't always been related concepts." Wyn admits dryly. If it were up to her, this would have been solved with giant robots fighting, but... it was the eighties. She was barely alive when the war officially ended.

"What's the UNSC?" she asks after a moment, tilting a head in curiosity.
