Meet N' Greet

Part of the crew might be gone, but life on the ship goes on. In fact, new people have woken up and, eventually, they've been spat out into the mess hall.

Maybe it's better to introduce them to some of the worst aspects of ship life first, right?

Anyway, the word is out that there's new people, and someone should probably go say hello. Before the n00bs mistake the glop for crew.

"Well, the ship gave it to me and I don't think it wants to hurt me..." That was mainly Yuri's experience talking. Authority figures had put her in situations that were terrifying, disgusting and dangerous but she was very slowly becoming used to that and none had yet actively tried to harm her. She made a child's unconscious assumption that they'd all be like that. "Anyway I think Borg would warn me if it were."

[identity profile] cardsharkgambit.livejournal.com 2009-06-02 06:53 am (UTC)(link)
"Borg?" Gambit repeated the word back to her, his forehead creasing with bewilderment. He obviously hadn't realized that the 'funny hat' that the little girl was wearing wasn't a hat at all. "Who's Borg?"

[identity profile] lilyofthedrills.livejournal.com 2009-06-02 06:57 am (UTC)(link)
Gambit was about to get a surprise as the froglike creature started talking in its raspy-buzzy voice. "That's me, buddy. You mess with Yuri and i'll-"

"Borg! Be nice, he didn't do anything to deserve that..."

[identity profile] cardsharkgambit.livejournal.com 2009-06-02 07:00 am (UTC)(link)
"Mon Dieu!" Remy cried out as he leaped up from his seat, surprised that the girl's hat was a talking hat. "Dat t'ing is a ALIVE!!"

[identity profile] lilyofthedrills.livejournal.com 2009-06-02 07:08 am (UTC)(link)
"Yes but I promise he won't hurt you!" Yuri said, waving her hands and trying desperately not to scare off the nice man. "I know they're scary, I don't like it very much either..."

[identity profile] cardsharkgambit.livejournal.com 2009-06-02 07:11 am (UTC)(link)
Scared away is something Gambit definitely isn't. Perplexed. Confused. Maybe a little WTF. Yes. But not scared. "What is it?" he asked. He didn't sit back down. Not yet. Not until he got some answers and found out why, exactly, this girl's headgear was talking.

"He's a symbiont who helps me catch other aliens...I have to wear him 'cause the rest of my class elected me to the Alien Party." Phooey, just as people were trying to be helpful too.

[identity profile] cardsharkgambit.livejournal.com 2009-06-02 07:18 am (UTC)(link)
"De alien what?" Remy asked, still not making any sign that he was about to sit down just yet. Gambit liked parties--loved them, in fact--but he was already getting turned off by alien ones, especially since they seemed to come with talking hats.

[identity profile] lilyofthedrills.livejournal.com 2009-06-02 07:21 am (UTC)(link)
"That's the school's alien catchers. Every school has one..." She was still getting used to the fact that for most people here, aliens weren't a daily problem in their worlds.

[identity profile] cardsharkgambit.livejournal.com 2009-06-02 07:25 am (UTC)(link)
Now he's even more confused. "What kinda school you go to, petite?" he asked, finally retaking his seat. Granted, Remy hadn't had anything like a formal education and while he'd heard and seen a lot of strange things in his life, he'd never heard of aliens in schools--much less all of them.

[identity profile] lilyofthedrills.livejournal.com 2009-06-02 07:28 am (UTC)(link)
"Middle School 9..." Wait that wasn't particularly helpful. Maybe if she gave some bigger facts? "In Japan, on Earth in the year 2025..."

[identity profile] cardsharkgambit.livejournal.com 2009-06-02 07:32 am (UTC)(link)
"You from de future den," Remy says, nodding. Now that isn't the strangest thing he's ever heard or seen. It's actually more common than he would like.

"Well, dat explain a lot."

[identity profile] lilyofthedrills.livejournal.com 2009-06-02 07:53 am (UTC)(link)
"The future to you? I guess." Maybe the aliens would never appear in his timeline. Sigh. That'd be awesome, to live there. "It's all so confusing."

[identity profile] cardsharkgambit.livejournal.com 2009-06-02 08:03 am (UTC)(link)
"You tellin' me. Gambit never heard of any aliens goin' to school on Earth," he answered. "What's your name, petite?"

[identity profile] lilyofthedrills.livejournal.com 2009-06-02 08:07 am (UTC)(link)
Yuri offered her hand, unused to the gesture but remembering this was how gaijin greeted each other. That some people in her country were still suspicious of foreigners (well, they were all foreigners here) seemed a little ridiculous to her compared with the real aliens in their midst. "I'm Yuri Otani."

[identity profile] cardsharkgambit.livejournal.com 2009-06-02 08:10 am (UTC)(link)
"Bon jour, Yuri," he returned, nodding as he took her hand and gave it a gentle shake. "De name's Gambit. But you can call me Remy."

[identity profile] lilyofthedrills.livejournal.com 2009-06-02 08:20 am (UTC)(link)
"Gambit?" She looked at him with wide, questioning eyes. "Are you a gambler, Remy-san?"

[identity profile] cardsharkgambit.livejournal.com 2009-06-02 08:36 am (UTC)(link)
"You might say dat," Remy answered, reaching into the interior pocket of his duster and pulling out one of the many decks of cards that he'd stashed there during his visit to the possessions lockers. Dividing the deck, he placed it on the table and shuffled it.

"Wanna see a trick, petite?"

[identity profile] lilyofthedrills.livejournal.com 2009-06-02 08:39 am (UTC)(link)
Yuri's eyes brightened. She was glad of the distraction. "Sure!"

[identity profile] cardsharkgambit.livejournal.com 2009-06-02 08:45 am (UTC)(link)
With a proud and playful smirk, Gambit shuffled the cards once more then held the deck cleanly in his left hand. He then squeezed them with his fingers, causing them to spray upwards into the air, forming a arc over his shoulder, before landing--each and everyone--into his awaiting right hand, which he'd extended behind his back.

[identity profile] lilyofthedrills.livejournal.com 2009-06-02 08:51 am (UTC)(link)
"Wow!" She found herself giving a little chuckle. "How do you do that?"

[identity profile] cardsharkgambit.livejournal.com 2009-06-02 08:56 am (UTC)(link)
"Practice, petite," Gambit answered with a smile, setting the deck down in front of her.

"So, how come you de one dat has to catch de aliens," he asked, turning the subject back to her and her world. "You just a kid. How come de adults don't do it."

[identity profile] lilyofthedrills.livejournal.com 2009-06-02 09:02 am (UTC)(link)
Yuri tried to recall the reasons she'd been given but realized she'd forgotten a long time ago...She didn't much care, really. All she wanted to know was how long she'd have to keep doing it. "The adults never tell us anything. They just talk a lot about duty."

The truth was, if anything, even more sinister, but Yuri didn't know that.

[identity profile] cardsharkgambit.livejournal.com 2009-06-02 06:51 pm (UTC)(link)
"Dat's not right," Gambit said with a shake of his head. "You just a kid. You too young to be worryin' about t'ings like aliens. Dat's de adult's job. Dey supposed to do dat."

[identity profile] lilyofthedrills.livejournal.com 2009-06-02 09:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Yuri gave a little smile. Gambit-san had a strange way of talking. She wanted to ask but figured it would be rude. "Adults are always doing adult stuff...like running the school and...Well maybe they fight the more dangerous aliens...Like I said they don't tell us much of anything! Do kids not have to fight in your world?"

The reality was that the Alien Party experience was the Drill Clan's way of prepping future symbiotes for the experience of fusing...Which, considering what the Yellow Knives and Sunflowers did, was the least cruel way of going about it.
