Kaylee hears a voice out in the mess. It's not loud enough to really understand what's being said, but she hears it, so she pulls her head out of Serenity's innards long enough to call, "I'm back here, if you need me!"

It's not as if there's any actual importance to what she's doing, but it's hard to remember that when she's working.
