Biweekly Warfare Training - Block Four

Another day, another class. Just more than a month and a half had gone by since Ronon and Kang had started their classes. And it's taken them this long to notice slight improvements as a whole.

Ronon and Kang stood at the front of the gathering crowd while looking out for new faces from the latest 'pod pop.' There was a lot they had to get through today, especially for the new folk. Turning to his scaled friend, he sternly nodded ready to start the class. It looked like everyone who was interested had made it on time. Latecomers beware. Mind you, class has started 10 minutes early.

[Things to be covered!

Hand to hand as always. More Sword training. More shooting practice and gun maintenance. Gotta keep those guns clean.

Previously!

April 26 - May 9: Basics of hand-to-hand, proper knife and sword handling. Important points: Eye contact with an opponent at all times, prevention of telegraphing moves, breathing, learning to read an opponent and spot weaknesses. Most of it so far has been defensive rather than offensive.

May 10 - May 23: More hand-to-hand, basic offensive moves with knives and swords, basics of guns.

May 24 - June 6: Basics of hand-to-hand, shooting practice with handguns and knife and sword training. It was the start of more offensive training.

Notes!

Ronon's pissed with the news of a Yeerk running free on board. Don't. push. him. on this if you know what happened the last time there was a Yeerk incident or your face will make friends with the floor. And Kang is still pissed by what the Ohm did after getting his memories back. Good luck unsuspecting students >:D

Also there is an OOC post here about the warfare classes.]

Riza had came just as she said she would. She hadn't bothered into lecturing the Colonel into going since she planned just to observe for the day. Having found something to keep Hayate on, she had left a while before the meeting time she'd remembered hearing. If they had a problem with the dog, Riza wouldn't really care. He was well trained and wouldn't bother anything, and even if he tried his master was there and strict.

While she didn't agree with passing on the sniping she knew, it hadn't stopped her from understanding that this place was dangerous. Which is what brought several debates to her head; one about guns and the other about the homunculi on the ship. Especially since she wasn't sure of what to think of this one. Guns, however, were an easier matter and one she hoped to be able to figure out while watching this meeting. That would all depend on the people and technique, as well as her own moral ethic.

Riza stayed near the back of the room, close to the exit and hopefully out of the way of anything that would occur. Firm on the pup tight, and of course she was armed. She always was, no matter where she went or what she was doing. Watching the gestures between the two men, Riza folded her arms across her chest and waited to see what would come. Only turning her eyes towards the pup as he stood up, but after he caught her eye immediately sat back down. Like she said, well trained.

If anyone had known anything about Katara, they would know that she hated guns. She hated how easy they were to use, she hated the amount of damage they caused, but most of all, she hated her first memory of a gun: it was during the time she'd gone after that Yeerk.

A time, unfortunately, that had come back once again.

And if that weren't enough, she hadn't seen her brother in awhile, or much of the others, and the absence in her mind was back all over again. It normally left that hole in her, making her scared and sick. Right now, she was neither of those things. Right now she just felt cold, quiet, and a slow anger building in her that didn't quite have a name.

Right now, she was in enough of a state that she could shoot a gun. She'd learned how during the mission that Jamie helped lead, and while it wasn't hard for her, it was still in balance with how she felt about shooting the things.

What was lucky for her was after talking to Jake she'd been too restless to wait for the proper time to go to the Drunken Dragon: she didn't want to be alone with her thoughts right now. So she'd jogged down to the City where she found her teachers already assembled.

Katara exchanged a quiet look with Ronon. She'd never forgotten that he'd been with her in the brig, that they'd shared a punishment for attacking against the very thing they feared now. She wasn't hear to relive that day though.

She was here to fight, to get out the pent up aggression.

Axl was usually the type to skate in exactly on time and not a minute sooner, but being in new territory, he'd decided to leave early and allow himself time for navigational mishaps on the way. Not until you're totally cut off that you start missing having a spotter yelling directions in your ear...

It hadn't taken him as long as he'd thought to find the place, though, so he was safely in the crowd with time to spare when things got underway.

He wasn't sure what he was in for, but no matter how harsh of teachers these guys were, there was no way it could be any more brutal than melee sparring with Zero.

OHM TRAINING

There is a surprise guest teacher today, who walks in wearing a rather impressive, 11-foot tall suit of powered armor (http://img708.imageshack.us/img708/6130/terminatorq.jpg).

"Greetings, everyone. I am Brother Cargn Thane In addition to your normal lessons with misters Ronon and Kang, I shall be conducting lessons on how to fight the Ohm. Some of it is based on my own first-hand experience, but much of it is based on second-hand observations. It will not be perfect training, obviously, but it is still useful to learn what information is available to you."

"Now, who would like to be first?"

Hand-to-Hand

[personal profile] governorkang 2010-06-08 03:50 am (UTC)(link)
After going over the basic maneuvers for the benefit of the newbies, using one of the more advanced students to demonstrate, Kang straightened up, "This is how it's going to work this time; anyone that's new, pair up with someone that's been attending the sessions longer. Help them to catch up if they need it." He crossed his arms over his chest, voice dead serious. "Remember, eye contact at all times. Keep your muscles relaxed. Breathe."

(Excuse the lack of icons. I should have them scanned soon.)

Nanashi stood back from the training, against the wall, with her hood up. The light was still burning her eyes, giving her a headache. She couldn't wait to meet with Beast Boy later and search for sunglasses or other eye-wear that would ease the effect of the light on her eyes. She noticed a few people she recognized, including Katara who she had spoken with on the comms.

But she was not here today to socialize. She was here to watch today. While she had been acting very friendly with all the people she met on the ship, she still did not count any of them as a friend, or even yet as allies.

Before she could even think about fighting beside any of them, she needed to see their capabilities. As a ruler of a kingdom at war, she had seen plenty of battle before. The swing of the sword, the feeling of bone crushing under her fist, these were not new feelings to her, and one of the first things she learned was that you needed to know the abilities of your allies on the battlefield before you can even consider using them. She never considered trusting them.

However, Katara and that other red-headed youth, they were still really pure-hearted children, even if they were fighters. They fought for pure reasons, unlike the adults of the universe, who only ever fought for greed, power, glory, or themselves in some way shape or form.
That didn't mean that they would be trusted immediately either. She of all people knew that appearance does not reflect actual age, and even then, she did not doubt that it was impossible for a child to be corrupted.

Giles was already acquainted with some of the things they were discussing. Most of it, actually. He could definitely say that he'd trained the best, and he still had the scars in a few cases to prove it. He was mostly here to learn more about the creatures he might not have experience with, and perhaps, as Kang had said, show some creatures from his world.

Kang unsettled him just a little, with his demonic looks, but it wasn't anything he couldn't handle. There was, though, a passing resemblance to the Fyarl race, the type Giles had been turned into once by Ethan.

Katara had not been expecting this, but she'd been through enough feelings in the last few days that concentrating on fighting the Ohm would be a break from just about everything else that was settling on her chest. Somehow, she felt a vague connection with Brother Cargn, who she still always regarded as the Seer, but what that connection was she couldn't easily say. What was more, his suit alone should have been enough to deter the smaller girl.

But at the same time, she remembered the screams of the people on her world. She remembered screaming for Aang, not knowing if he was all right. She remembered seeing the horror and wondered that were the Ohm

And so, she would not back down. She walked up to Brother Cargn and give him a bow.

"I would be honored to engage you first," she said.

Same as with hand-to-hand, Kang made sure to go over the basics for the newcomers before he did anything else, so that they wouldn't be completely lost.

"You've improved. Not by much, but you have. You still have a hell of a long way to go, though," he snorted. "I have told you repeatedly to stop using your swords like in the damn movies. If I catch you doing so"--he shot pointed looks at the worst offenders in the group--"I will be pulling you aside and working with you personally. Now take your weapons and pair off. One of you focus on offense, the other defense."

"You will not be engaging me," he said simply.

Cargn taps the blunt end of his halberd on the ground, and with a glow of psionic energy, a psychic reconstruction of one of the Ohm Grunts (http://img44.imageshack.us/img44/5498/gruntu.jpg) appeared before Katara.

The false-creature loomed over the girl, about 15 feet tall, standing disturbingly still.

That was, until it leaped towards her, slashing one of its long claws straight at her torso.

Re: OHM TRAINING

[identity profile] kaya-waterwave.livejournal.com 2010-06-08 04:48 am (UTC)(link)
It happened so fast, Katara had to rely on her Bene Gesserit senses to guide her: that was the extension of the body reaction while the mind was still trying to process all that was going on. In this case, Cargn wasn't coming at her himself, but giving her the opponent that she was still slightly fearing in her dream.

But there was no time to fear now. What needed to happen was strategy.

She started by icing the floor in front of them: the Ohm grunt still needed to use its legs to keep balance, and Katara was going to do her best to eliminate that for it. But when it leapt at her with its claws, even Katara was surprised at how quickly her body had shifted to its first step, and she was in back of the creature now, avoiding the first body slash. She brought her right arm forward and slashed at its back legs, hoping to catch it unawares.

She was really pleased to see all her training at with Prana Bindu was coming close to where she wanted.

Yzak looked around. He was pretty sure he recognized who Kang was, from the small exchange he had earlier with him. He felt a bit out of place, as he was more than properly trained in most of these areas already.

But he said he'd come. And he would be able to see how he fared against a non-human combatant sooner or latter. Even if it might not be much help in comparison to the Ohm, it was still something. And when there was something to be gained, Yzak would definitely go for it.

Re: OHM TRAINING

[identity profile] ohm-nom-nom.livejournal.com 2010-06-08 05:07 am (UTC)(link)
The ice on the floor did little to unbalance the creature--it walked on the tips of its claws, and with so little surface area, it didn't slide or slip around like most creatures would.

The creature leaped up, turning in midair as it dodged her attack. It seemed to have very good spatial awareness. Catching it off guard looked like it would be difficult.

As soon as it landed back on the ground, it barreled straight towards her, intent on ramming her with its body to knock her off-balance.

Kate knew about guns, but she still wanted to up her hand to hand and sword knowledge. She'd use a gun if she had to, but still preferred her bow.

She did some stretches before proceeding into the hand to hand practice.

CRAP.

She hadn't expected its reflexes to be this on point, nor had she expected that the claws wouldn't even be affected by the icing on the floor. This was going to call for some serious thinking.

Without even wasting time, the thing had already regained its wind and was coming at her. Katara dodged again, but barely, and once she took her step back she could see that the creature was trying to undo her balance too. She took in a breath, and in the next motion she was gone again, levying a straight move at its head that would take in the creature's strength and reflect back at it.

Hopefully.

The strike hit, but the creature merely skids backwards slightly on the ice, remaining well balanced.

It was tougher than it looked.

Three of the creature's claws seemed to dig into the ice, giving it leverage as it moved to slam her in the side with the back of its other claw.

Re: OHM TRAINING

[identity profile] kaya-waterwave.livejournal.com 2010-06-08 05:36 am (UTC)(link)
Katara took in a harsh breath. This thing was...tough. It was tougher than anything she'd faced in awhile. It was a little like fighting against a fire nation tank.

So much so that while she was readying her next attack, it DID get her and slam her into the ground. Katara gasped for breath, but kept her breathing limited, just so she didn't expound all of her strength. A moment later she was gone again, only this time she was coming at the creature a little more viciously, her attacks at its legs happening rapidly, her feet adjusting to a stable stance so she wouldn't lose her balance this time.

Re: OHM TRAINING

[identity profile] ohm-nom-nom.livejournal.com 2010-06-08 05:47 am (UTC)(link)
The creature shifted slightly with each of Katara's attacks, backing up in a way a human martial artist might use in order to lessen the severity of their enemy's attacks. Not only was it tough, it was smart.

At one point, though, while Katara is readying her next attack, it drops down low, shifting its two front claws straight forward so they go directly underneath Katara. With a rush of motion, it pulls its claws back up, intent on flipping her over by slamming her with its claws.

Re: OHM TRAINING

[identity profile] kaya-waterwave.livejournal.com 2010-06-08 06:02 am (UTC)(link)
Katara could have swore. This creature was TOUGH: it was readying itself for her the way a more lithe martial artists might, and it was already trying to knock her off balance.

It moved quick, but this was finally one of the few times that her brain reacted. She understood with the rush of movement that it would try to knock her over so she surge forward, pressing her body against the creature's.

She wasn't sure how heavy it was, but she was about to find out.

Re: OHM TRAINING

[identity profile] daemonomicon.livejournal.com 2010-06-08 06:13 am (UTC)(link)
She hits the creature, and it began to tumble backwards, but it used her momentum to take her with it, rolling with her. By the time they stopped rolling, it was on top of her, pinning her down. It raised one claw high, ready to deliver the killing stroke.

"Enough!" Cargn called, and the creature halted, before fading off of Katara and back to it's 'neutral' position back by Cargn's side.

He walked over, offering Katara a hand to help her back up.

"How much first-hand experience have you had?"

Yzak stared at Cargn, crossing his arms. "I'd be interested, naturally. Even though I'd prefer combat in my mobile suit more."

Katara took the hand, her face flushed, stilling herself not to cry in frustration. She lost. The greatest enemy they would ever had to face, and this thing was one of the mere foot soldiers and she lost miserably. Katara collected herself, checking her damage. Her side was definitely bruised, her arm was scraped pretty badly and she was out of breath, but otherwise she was all right physically. She sighed.

"That didn't go as well as I hoped," Katara said, her voice small. "What can I do to improve, teacher?"

'Vadum watched from his position by the wall. Observing silently the introduction Cargn gave, an incline of his head the only sign of his interest at first. Tensing at the sight of the Ohm Grunt but otherwise remaining silent as he watched the human female,Katara if he recalled correctly, attempt to take it on.

Analyzing its movements, the way it acted and reacted. Looking for any chink, any sign of weakness in its spindly form. A time after that first fight, eyes on the Ohm at its neutral position as the near 8ft tall armoured Sangheili Shipmaster pushed off the wall. "I wish to try my hand,"

Mingling is cool right?

"It's easy for a pilot to forget that hand-to-hand is just as likely to save your life as piloting, especially when defending a ship or base," Char comments. "It pays to be well-rounded."

"Although, I am interested in learning how to deal with the ship- and vehicle-scale Ohm Brother Thane's network post mentioned."

Stephen had arrived early, but it had taken him a few moments to figure out exactly where he wanted to submit himself. Not that he wouldn't be working on firearms and hand-to-hand, but...

Swords. Yeah, he hadn't had a lot of experience there. That seemed the best place to go first.
