I feel the need...the need for speed [ CLOSED ] [ ATTN: ROGUE SQUADRON ]

At last, it seemed the new version of Rogue Squadron was going to be getting off the ground. It had been a good morning run, followed by a bit of calisthenics and some cool down time. Then breakfast and the squadron had been reassembled at the Sensoriums. Wedge looked over the assembled recruits, his helmet tucked under one arm.

"Alright. Today, we'll be starting with the basics. Take off, landing, basic flight maneuvers. Maybe more if we have time. You'll break into your flight wings and take separate sims. I trust all of you to do your best. If there are any problems or questions, you can contact me on the comm rings. Let's get to it."

Now, now, now. [slap] Patience, Padawan.

"I am ready!" Arha said brightly, tugging a bit at her orange flightsuit's collar as she fastened it. She'd braided her hair back, the twists ornate and surprisingly functional. Only a few wisps had escaped, leaving her hair glinting in a copper gleam as the light hit is. With her helmet was neatly balanced under her arm at her hip, she peered eagerly past Wedge for a moment before pinning him in her sights and staring intently, her eyes wide and focused. He'd give them the go-ahead on his time, obviously, but that didn't distract Arha from attempting to bore holes straight through him in the meantime.

Had she been anyone else, she might have been bouncing up and down in glee. The grin, however, was right there, wordlessly blasting let's go! at him as clear as anything. Arha wasn't going to be satisfied until she had whatever lessons Wedge offered down to the letter.

And she had been ready to learn the second she'd woken.

"I'm ready to go!" Danny said, bouncing on the heels of his feet. Yeah, he could fly unassisted, but he'd long been obsessed with spaceflight, and possibly getting to do it outside of the creepy ship only made things better,

The run had been agonizingly slow, though easy besides that, and Bart still wasn't sure how to pronounce "calisthenics," but he had done them without complaining. Now they were finally ready to start training and he could barely contain himself.

"Howfastaretheywereagain?" he asked, bouncing up and down on the balls of his feet to keep himself from just running off.

"Great. I got a kid speedster." He shakes his head and yawns. This hour should be illegal. Sure he was used to waking up at that hour, but only because of X-Men training. He sighed and watched the child in front of him. The kid couldn't even be a teenager yet. "You know something, aren't you a little young to fly... anything."

Asuka, being Asuka, had shown up wearing a plugsuit. It was the closest thing she had to a flightsuit and she liked showing it off, anyway. She was, however, practically bouncing of the walls with excitement, going oup on the balls of her feet and then back down as she stretched herself out. Finally, she'd get a chance to pilot something, even if it was a fake snubfighter in the sensorioums. She flashed Wedge a 'V' sign with her right hand, "Ready to go!"

"He's fine, recruit."

Mara looked over the three volunteers she'd been assigned, and wondered if this was some sort of attempt by Luke to trick her into working on her inner peace despite anything that might happen. She watched impulse bounce on the balls of his feet and ran through a technique to ward off a stress headache. Wedge wanted them to be pilots, and she would turn them into pilots. Whether they wanted her to or not.

"First order of business is to get everyone into a ship and through the start up procedure. Then we'll worry about how fast they're going to go. Think you three can handle that much?" She pinned Impulse with a look. "And no skipping steps."

Jamie stood by more calmly, arms crossed over his chest as he waited for instructions. He was eager to see the craft they'd be learning to pilot, but bouncing around acting agitated wouldn't accomplish anything.

Bruce is already halfway strapped in, rolling his eyes. 'Fine' is most certainly not the most operative word for referring to a superpowered ADHD sufferer being allowed to operate heavy machinery.

He taps at the controls a few times and the engines thrum into life. Well, at least he already knows which buttons to press.

Sam didn't come from a world where anything like the X-wings were in use. He was lucky, though, finding one like the ones he'd seen in the movies. And it even fit well enough, thankfully.

"I'm just hoping whoever this belongs to doesn't come after me when they wake up." Sam grinned as he joined the girls, trying not to slouch too much. He did sort of tower. "Ready when you are, General."

He was on a training wing with Wedge Antilles. Sam was doing his damnedest not to geek out.

Bobby salutes the red head and shoots off a 'yes ma'am' before moving off to his own simulator. Once he's strapped in, he gets a feel for the controls. "Definitely nothing like the X-Jet." He shook his head. This was going to be fun.

"Why would I skip steps?" Bart asked. "I've played video games like this. If you miss part of a combo, you don't get as many points. And sometimes the move doesn't work at all--oh." Right, into the simulator. He blurred in and strapped himself down. "Okay... this is exactly like Space Shooters IV!"

He pressed a few buttons and... "Whoops!" Those were the guns. Okay, it wasn't exactly like Space Shooters IV. He tried again, this time hitting the right buttons. The engine started.

Arha moved around hers, quick to follow instructions as she checked twice to make sure nothing was wrong, then neatly found her way into the cockpit (after making sure her helmet was on right) and proceeded to strap in. She murmured snippets from the manual she'd found, but didn't actually touch anything.

Yet.

She glanced down the hangar bay and into black for a moment, then stared hard at it. This would be fascinating.

"I am strapped in and ready," she called.

[identity profile] redheadcarrier.livejournal.com 2010-01-14 02:34 am (UTC)(link)
Asuka grinned as she essentially ran around her X-Wing, examining it. It looked a bit like a jet from back home, but still different. No external missile hardpoints, for one thing. Still, nothing looked wrong from her quick glance, so she scrambled up into the cockpit and started strapping in, giving her control stick an experimental jog. Felt alright to her!

"Soryu's ready!"

Sam had read the manual he'd found in the media library, so he had a basic idea of what he was looking for, problem-wise. He took extra care, though, the same he'd do with any of his weapons. That's what this was, after all, with the added bonus of being responsible for keeping him alive once in the air.

Finally, though, he climbed up into the cockpit, settling into the seat with a wide, wide grin. "Oh man, I still can't believe this is happening," he said, strapping himself in before hitting the comm ring. "Winchester ready and standing by."

[identity profile] ladyofthesands.livejournal.com 2010-01-14 08:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Arha ran through her checklist quickly, then went over it again before everything was primed and ready. Comms were fine, weapons checked out, life support showed nothing wrong, and the engines and hyperdrive showed no problems.

"Three is green," Arha said crisply. "I am ready to do this taking off."

[identity profile] hunters-luck.livejournal.com 2010-01-15 02:49 am (UTC)(link)
Wedge owed her.

Mara slammed her helmet on and walked to her own simulated ship, sliding into place and pulling on the harness without even thinking about it. She had been doing this for her entire life, and the start up sequence rattled off by memory.

"Flight, check in when start up is complete and you're green to launch." Assuming they figured out where the start buttons were. Did any of them actually read the manual? This was one way to find out.

He'd done more than read the manual. Bruce knew the schematics by heart. He could build one of these things if he weren't already working on a much fancier toy.

He folds his arms and from his cockpit shoots a glance in Bart's direction, just to make sure he doesn't interpret 'check in when start up is complete' as 'jam down on the thrusters'.

"Warmed up over here. Ready when you are."

[identity profile] speedforbrains.livejournal.com 2010-01-16 03:35 am (UTC)(link)
Bart, of course, jammed down on the thrusters.

[identity profile] redheadcarrier.livejournal.com 2010-01-20 05:29 am (UTC)(link)
Asuka only took a few moments to flip all of the necessary switches. Easy! She didn't even have to try and sync to the silly thing. She clicked her commlink, "Two is green! Let's go already!"

She tapped her foot impatiently, although she made sure she wasn't hitting the wrong pedal.

Well, somebody in the flight has never piloted anything bigger than the Impala, so it takes Sam a minute or two to make sure he has all the right things switched on. The rest of them might get impatient, but this was training and making sure it's right is part of the plan.

Finally, though, Sam comes over the comms. "Four is green. Prepared for take off." If he sounds slightly embarrassed, well, that's probably because he took so long.

Arha followed suit, feeling the steady rush of power as she accelerated to the correct speed and nudged herself out into the black. Despite the distant twinkle of stars, and the fact that all of this was simulated, Arha's stomach dropped. She took a few measured breaths and cleared the ship, pulling her snubfighter alongside Wedge's.
