Time for the 'meat' and greet

[NOTE: This takes place DURING the holiday plot. If your character is involved in that, then they're still on the surface and not on the ship at this time.]

The rest of the crew assembled on the Observation Deck to meet the latest editions to their numbers. After the revelation that their worlds are gone, many of them are even more eager to see people they knew from home.

Several people are set up near the doors to provide the new people with omnicoms and comm rings.

There's a lot to tell the new people. It's going to be a lot to take in.

[ooc: Only new characters and Command Staff can start new threads for introductions, to limit the number of threads. Everyone else, just tag in and have your guys greet the newbies. The mission is still going on, so if your character is offship, they won't be around for this.]

Mal looked thoughtful for a moment as he considered Kaylee's words. "Don't think so, no. At least, there wasn't one when I first got here." He smiled slightly as he looked at her. "You kind of figure things out as you go along. I ain't the best at explainin', though," he said, looking a bit apologetic.

"Sure she does. I mean, what ship doesn't? I haven't been explorin' much, but I'm sure there's one around here somewhere." Here, Mal paused and eyed Kaylee, pretending to look serious. "But, you know, if you're planning on fixing up this ship, you might have to put those plans on hold. 'Cause there's something else I'd like you to look at instead."

"Well, ain't like I've never had to adjust to somethin' new before." Mal was here to help her with that adjustment, at least. That was more than she really could have asked for. "You haven't been here by your lonesome long, have ya?" Hopefully he was making friends. The good kinds.

So there it was. As soon as she had figured out how all this place was supposed to work, she'd be searching out the engine. There had to be something running her, right? "Don't gotta fix her so much as get to know the parts." Think of the stuff she could take home. Or not. Kaylee grinned. "What needs lookin', Cap'n?"

"That's true enough. Seems we've seen more than enough things that were worse than this." Mal was glad that Kaylee was taking this as well as she was; and if she had any doubts or confusion, he'd be around to work through them with her. "I haven't been here all that long, but I've met a couple of nice folks, and some who'd just as soon pick a fight as talk," Mal said with a bit of a smirk.

"I didn't ask you to be my ship's mechanic for nothin'." Mal smiled at her, a hint of pride in his voice. "As for what needs to be looked at, Serenity's here, Kaylee. Don't really know how she ended up here, but I ain't questionin' that. You think you're up to checkin' her out?" He paused then, looking over his mechanic carefully. "Ain't no rush, seeing how you've just arrived and all."

She didn't really have a choice but to accept it all. It was either take everything in one big gulp and hope that was that, or she'd be crawling right back into that pod wanting to go home. "Least nobody's tryin' to eat nobody, right?" Kaylee hoped not. The least this mess could have done was to relieve them of Reaver-related worries.

As soon as Mal said Serenity was on board, any other thoughts flooded straight out her ears, and her grin grew ear to ear. "Is she runnin' alright? Flown her at all since ya got here?" No rush, yeah right. Already she was itching to go crawl up to her engine room and pretend everything was normal. Normal as it could be, anyways. "Where's she at?"

[identity profile] am-alwaysfree.livejournal.com 2010-01-04 04:36 pm (UTC)(link)
"Eat nobody?" Mal looked confused for a few seconds before he realized what Kaylee was talking about. "No, no one's been trying to eat anyone. Mostly, we're all just trying to figure out how to do what we're supposed to do and then get sent home." It was funny how a situation like the one they were in created feelings of teamwork and needing to work together to get things done.

"Don't think she's runnin' at the moment, and I ain't flown her, 'cause if I don't know if she's gonna work, I'm not gonna risk an accident," Mal replied. He pointed off in a general direction, towards the storage bays, and added, "She's being kept in the cargo bays, cause there ain't nowhere else big enough. Guess that means you're wantin' to go see her."

Kaylee listened closely to Mal, nodding as he spoke. If they were here because their homes were destroyed, at least he was on the optimistic route of getting home. That meant there was hope, and where there was hope, Mal was always a little better off. "I'd be more'n happy to pitch in, then." She shifted the messenger bag on her shoulder. "Serenity up for stayin' in, or do they got someplace else they want us to sleep?"

If she could stay on Serenity maybe it wouldn't be so strange and uncomfortable of a place. "I'll take a look at her, but if somethin's missin' we're gonna have to figure out where to get the parts that'll fix her."

I am such a loser, I'm sorry that this is so late.

Finally, a bit of good news that he could tell his mechanic. With a nod, Mal replied, "Serenity's definitely up for stayin' in. At least, she's worked well enough for me and the other woman person I invited to stay there."

That reminded Mal, he hadn't told Kaylee about the guest he'd let stay on board the ship. "Uh.. Just lettin' you know, Kaylee, it ain't gonna just be us livin' there. That is, if you want to. I let this woman called Jo Lupo stay on board. Might even teach her to fly Serenity."

"Oh, and you should know, Serenity's runnin' fine, far as life support goes. But I'm thinkin' somethin's not right with her engine. Might want to look to that when you have a second."

I've waited longer for tags, no worries. <3

Good. That meant Kaylee at least had a hammock she could curl up in and feel comfortable. Maybe a couple of her jumpsuits were still in her bunk, too. As for the woman...

Kaylee gave Mal a sly look. "Should I be inquirin' as to the nature of this development, or should I leave the lectures for Shepherd to throw at ya later?" In all seriousness, though, "She ever pilot before?" Kaylee wasn't about to allow Mal to let just anybody fly her baby, after all.

"Shiny! Point me the right way and I'll take a look." Life support working meant one less thing to worry about. It also narrowed down any problem spots they might run into.

<3 Thanks

Mal couldn't help grinning at Kaylee's comment. He'd expected her to react like that, and yet he couldn't keep from laughing, even though her questions were legitimate, to a certain extent. "Ain't nothin' to be inquirin' about, Kaylee. It's strictly an arrangement between friends. She wanted somewhere with real beds, so I figured why not offer Serenity."

The smile was quickly replaced by a more serious expression, as he addressed Kaylee's other question. "Don't think so, but a person can always learn. I mean to teach her. I'm not as good as Wash, but I still can teach a person to fly if I need to," he said, a hint of defensiveness in his voice.

"Serenity's bein' kept in the vehicle bays. Ain't nowhere else big enough, I guess. You're more than welcome to go down there anytime." The half-smile returned to Mal's face. "Serenity'll be wantin' to see you."

[identity profile] voiceofserenity.livejournal.com 2010-01-14 02:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Even though Mal denied anything happening, and she believed him, Kaylee still had to cast a slightly suspicious eye over him. Just in case. He probably needed a good, strong teasing right about now anyways. "Where'd you put her?" There was the empty crew quarters, or one of the extra passenger quarters...Kaylee really couldn't see him letting her sleep in one of their quarters, even if they were all still podded up.

Even so, if she was a smart enough lady--and from what Mal was saying Kaylee had no doubt about that--and enough of a good person that he was gonna try and teach her to fly, Kaylee had no qualms. It wasn't every day Mal picked up somebody he liked and decided to let them stay on his baby. "If you need help, I can at least get the idea of the workin's into her," she offered.

Here only a few hours, and Kaylee really didn't want to do anything except get back to her ship. Part of her wondered if, maybe, this was all a bit of a dream or some stupid practical joke they'd decided to pull. Most of her knew that wasn't so, but Serenity would offer some comfort. "I'll get back to her soon as I possibly can."
