The hug helps Katara too: she felt as bad about people she didn't save as if they were people she had met. It wasn't fair: they deserved to live. They were all in the same situation with their worlds being destroyed, yet they would never get to know what the ship was like, never get to meet any of them. It choked her up.
"We'll cry for them," Katara said. "That's the most we can do, the most anyone can right now. And we'll cry for B5 who WAS here, who mattered and saved this ship. They will remind us what happens when we aren't unified, and it'll make sure we don't mess up like this again."
