A House Divided [Part 3]

[Instructions: Here.]

Despite a few tricks up their sleeves, the Conspirators hardly stood a chance. It's all or nothing as they make a few last ditch attempts to kill the Yeerk, and as the fight grinds to a screeching halt.

Will they kill the Yeerk?

Will someone other than the Yeerk get killed in the crossfire?

"Hey, Dr. Grey, anything I can do to help?" asked Danny.

Steve was all worked up and frightened and more than a little hurt when Jean ordered him away from Claire. It hadn't even occurred to him that she had exposed blood he should stay away from just in case. "I'm not hurt, it's fine!" he snapped right back at Jean out of reflex.

Still, he backed away enough for Jean to take his place by Claire's side if only because she knew what to do and he didn't. "Claire, don't die!" he kept on yelling, leaning so he could watch her face and make sure she didn't. "You can't let her die! We gotta take her to the medbay!"

"Danny, if you could-" And then Steve's all but yelling in her ear. She flashes him an annoyed look as she's putting pressure on Claire's wound. "Steve! This isn't about you and I swear if you don't step back away from me, I'll move you myself!"

She takes a deep breath and looks over at Danny. "I'm going to need help moving Claire to a safer place. I could do it, but I want to concentrate fully on stopping the blood flow."

"Gotcha." Danny said, splitting into a pair of himself. The duo formed a flat ecto barrier beneath Claire. "Alright, when I say lift.. One, two, LIFT." the original said, and the two Danny's lifted the makeshift stretcher.

There was way too much going on for Claire to follow, the pain spreading in her abdomen almost too much. It was fortunate that Jean's hands had replaced her own because she wasn't really sure she had the strength to keep the pressure on her injury. She attempted to focus on Jean's face, then on Steve's voice, then there was more going on, and she just gave up trying to follow. Instead she focused on breathing, anything to keep her from passing out from the pain.

She cried out involuntarily when she was lifted, but it was more the sudden movement than anything, jostling her enough to strike a fresh wave of pain over the current one. Still conscious, but hurting.

This time Steve backed off, stumbling to his feet and stepping away immediately. He watched with a blank look on his face as Jean and the other guy...s... loaded Claire up onto the stretcher and he had no idea what to do now.

Should he follow them back to the medbay? (What did they need him for? All he'd do is get her sick or get in the way.) Try to clear a path ahead of them so it'd be easier to get through? (Oh, the guy with the clones or whatever could probably do that too, wasn't he just so cool with his stupid powers?) What would he do if Claire was hurt so badly she was going to die? (She was the only one who cared at all what happened to him.) How could he be so self-centered at a time like this? Claire was badly hurt. He shouldn't be worried about anything else right now!

Steve felt a painful little twinge in his chest and he swallowed, feeling lightheaded again. "Should I..." he started, but then cut himself off. It'd be better if he just left them alone.

Jean's eyebrows furrow as she tries to keep her blood covered hands pressed firmly on Claire's wound while Danny lifts her up. Perhaps seeing him double would have made some do a double take, but she knew there were mutants in her world who probably would be able to do the same thing, so it's really not all that surprising.

Claire though, she needed to be moved to the medlab and fast! Jean would need to remove the bullet and at the rate Claire was losing blood, there was a posssilbity that she'd need a blood transfusion.

"Alright, we need to get her out of here and to the medlab fast," Jean instructed before turning her head to look at Steve. "Steve, I need you to get up there and let them know we're bringing her up there."

"10-4 on that." The halfas said in unision, and they began moving, with just enough speed for Jean to keep up and keep Claire's wound compressed.

Oh moving. That was good. Claire closed her eyes, trying to just focus on keeping her breathing steady, although it wasn't really the easiest thing in the world. She had never actually been shot before, but she'd been banged up, scratched by Tyrant claws and broken bones, so she didn't really think if she ever was shot it was something she wouldn't be able to handle.

All the same she was sorely tempted to just start screaming and not stop until someone sedated her. Still, she was able to control the urge by trying to stay still and not upset anything more than it already was. Somehow, though, she remembered why she'd paused and made herself open in the first place and her eyes opened, one hand reaching to grasp Jean's wrist.

"Are... Leon and the others okay?" Leave it to Claire to think of others when she was the one in need of medical attention.

Having some explicit direction seemed to do wonders for Steve. He immediately snapped to attention and nodded, running up ahead and basically shoving his way through the crowds of people on his way to the medbay. Running made his head clear and gave him something to think about besides Claire lying there, bleeding and pained.

His chest still hurt, a vague little sensation of squeezing and pressure, but he ignored it completely.

As they move toward the City's exit, Jean's telekinetically pushing people out of their way. Normally she wouldn't do something like that, but Claire's losing a lot of blood and they really doesn't have the time to be skirting around others at the moment.

Looking down at Claire, she gives the other woman as reassuring a smile she can give to her at that point in time. "I'm sure he's fine," Jean says, "But you know Leon, he's holding his own. So let's worry about you for right now, OK?"

She glances over at Danny, "We need to hurry..." She's really not liking how much blood Claire is losing.

She looked somewhat appeased by Jean's answer, relaxing her grip on the other woman's wrist and nodding her head a little, exhaling and letting her eyes close again. She'd fight to stay conscious, but the light-headed feeling accompanying all the pain was making everything start to feel extremely disconnected.

"Okay," she answered belatedly. "I'm... just gonna lie here and not move for a while, then."

"Either is keeping others out of our way," Jean answered Danny as she mentally pushed a few more crewmates out of their way.

Her attention shifted to Claire and she smiled at her. "That's a good idea. But try not to fall asleep, OK?"

Finally they reached the exit and Jean telekinetically threw the doors open. "We'll be up in the medlab taking care of all of this before you know it and you'll be just fine, Claire."

"Yeah, stay with us. Mr. Kennedy's got enough reason to read me the riot act as it is. Don't really want to add to it." Danny said, his usual defense mechanism of humor coming to the fore.

Jean shook her head, but said nothing. Maybe humor was the way that Danny dealt with stress and honestly there were worse ways he could have been dealing. Danny though, is not on Jean's list of things to worry about. Making sure Claire was OK was.

Luckily the corridors were basically empty as she and Danny brought Claire up to the Medlab, so no time was wasted trying to get others out of their way.

Once inside the medlab and after getting Claire onto an operating table, she shot Danny a grateful look. "Thanks for your help. Maybe you can go see if anyone else needs to be brought up here..."
