Emergence [Open]

Katara had only HEARD of the Statuary and suggested team Sierra go meet there. She hadn't had time to inspect it herself tough, so she decided to go check it out on her own today, happy to finally do some exploring on her own. It was quiet when she arrived, but there was a feeling she had when she looked up at the figures: they all had a story to tell, and they all had their place. When she observed Elfangor's, she wondered if she should ask Ax about his story. Would it not be something he'd want to talk about? Would it be like bringing up her mom dying too? She was unsure.

Still, she continued looking on. She only wanted to make sure the place was fine to meet, but she found herself lost in all she saw. She closed her eyes and was still a moment, then continued exploring.

There is a faint wind blowing all of a sudden, just a breeze. Perhaps from one of the many vents around the ship? Most likely, it isn't even worth noticing, but the sharp whistling of the wind makes it sound as if somewhere it's blowing through a crack in stone.

Where exactly is it coming from?

Following it leads to a small doorway set in the room that leads to another part of the Statuary. Emblazoned on it are four very familiar symbols.

Air. Water. Earth. Fire.

In fact, the entire design of the doorway is familiar in design. It looks like something that would be in one of the Air Temples. It leads to a tunnel.

The tunnel...opens up to a very familiar chamber from the Southern Air Temple. It rose up and up to a massive ceiling that seemed an impossible distance away, and spiraling down, down, are statues of Avatars past.

Here, it's just like it was when she saw it last, all of them posed in a placid gestures, in the order of the Avatar cycle, Earth, Fire, Air, Water, faces calm and gentle or harsh and stern, but all of them with stone eyes carved in a way to look wise.

In the center of the spiral on the floor, there are the last few Avatars, Yangchen, Kuruk, Roku, and...

There is one that wasn't there before.

Whenever this place was preserved--or copied--if that were the case, it must have been from her future. The statue had been carved when he was older--and taller than her now--but he still relatively young compared to the other statues of Avatars carved while in their prime, largely because the world had not wanted to forget the fact that the Avatar that had stopped a hundred years of war had been hardly more than a child.

Unlike the other statues, his had the slightest of peaceful smiles in its stone features, as if the sculptor just couldn't bear to leave out some indication of his true character.

But who had carved it if the Airbenders were all gone? Was this the real chamber, stolen away from their world or a facsimile?

"You really shouldn't wander around alone," says a gentle voice, near the doorway, but when she looks, she'll see that Jaime Reyes' eyes are pretty much transfixed on the the statues here. It is certainly an impressive sight.

"We had someone die before, after wandering off. He was armed and a soldier and everything. The whole point is it could happen to anyone--even I don't wander around alone that much."

Which implies certain things about himself.

"They get like that a lot with us kids. It's best to just ignore it and try to keep acting responsible until they get it." He snorts. "And sometimes I have the opposite problem, where they trust me with all these responsibilities because of how I act and forget I'm still just sixteen, so it surprises them when I act like it."

"It was a little different then. We weren't alone on the ship--there were these giant...bug-monsters. As far as we know, Stacy got rid of them all, but there's a lot of places for someone or something to hide here, so it's a good idea not to get too complacent."

Still looking around, he wanders more into the room.

"What is this place? And who are all these people? Whatever it is, it's beautiful."

Jaime raises an inquisitive eyebrow.

"That kinda brings up the separate but related question of what an Airbender is."

No cultural reference, here, Katara. They don't have Benders in his world.

He's thoughtful for a moment. "Unless the ship's translation tech is messing with it, it sounds like it's giving the actual word that you're saying." Which it doesn't always do. Only if the words are the same in both languages. He's gotten good at spotting the very subtle signs that the translator is changing what someone said to something new.

"In my world, 'Avatar' or 'avatara' is Sanskrit--it means 'descent.' Like, from heaven to Earth. One of the religions in my world use it to describe the many forms of the gods they believe in, when they took human form on Earth. Is that what your Avatar is? Like a god in human form?"

Zuko appears from a hole in the wall.

No, really. There is a small vent in the wall near Katara, and after a few moments of muffled grunting and suspicious squelching noises, a hand emerges, followed by a head, and then Zuko is hanging half-out of the wall beside her, hair drenched in vent goop, still up to his waist in vent.

He looks at Katara from his rather vulnerable position and blinks, once, like an animal caught in headlights.

"Oh. Hey." he says, as inoffensively as possible.

Iceburg. Avatar. Four Nations. A war. Impromptu cryogenic stasis?

The pieces start to come together now, at least a little.

One major thing clicks.

"I can see now why you were upset at the idea of this distant, jerkface kinda God demanding obedience from the top of a mountain. In your world, you have this very powerful being walking around helping people that's just a normal guy."

"The thing is, it's okay, because I think it's a good thing to question blind faith--whether it's your own, or other people's. The things you said--and questioned--are things that even a lot of people who believe in God wonder," Jaime says.

"Sometimes, I've gotten really angry at God. Especially during the times I was mad at myself for failing people--when that happens I think if He's supposed to know everything, and be that powerful, why doesn't he stop bad things from happening? Why did it depend on me?"

Jaime points to her when she says that.

"That right there is what I think. It's kind of arrogant, but..."

Well. There's metahumans running around saving existence. Miracles and near-miracles happen all the time. That has to fit in somewhere.

"I've fought angels--creatures at God's right hand. One of my friends made a deal with the devil to get superpowers and only managed to save his soul through a technicality. There's Greek gods, and superhumans, and aliens--and magic. My world is complicated--maybe it's so complicated that if God stuck his nose in and tipped the scales in any way, it'd all go crashing to the ground, maybe there's rules people don't know about, that let them have free will, but free will means when people do bad things, only other people can stop them. I just figure there's things I don't know."

Jaime sucks in a deep breath.

"But I do know that no world is perfect. You had your war, and we've had our fights, again and again, but you have your Avatar and anyone else who fought to fix it, and we have people who fight to fix ours, too. And in a world where there's all this biological impossibility going on--good guy aliens that can shoot ray beams from their eyes, and living explosions, and demigoddesses, and just brave people fighting the good fight when all they really have is that they're brave and smart--maybe all of that is our God's doing. Your powerful spirit fights besides you and inspires you--maybe ours fights through us instead."
