A typical Doctor Who companion injury [open, post-rebellion]

Of all things, Ian hadn't been expected to be bested by a tree. That it was a tree that moved without the wind should have given him a clue, but, well, it was a tree. He'd got too close, it got a good hit in, he'd landed awkwardly and now he couldn't walk.

It was only his ankle and, feeling embarrassed about the whole thing, he'd intended to just hobble home. Except that it did really hurt. So halfway there he found the nearest teleport and ended up in the medbay.

"Good thing you're off it now, then," John said, moving over toward the bed. "Let's have a look. How bad's the pain on a scale of one to ten, one being painless and ten being agonized screaming?"

Just like being back at the GP's office. He'd save the lecture about walking on potentially-broken bones until after he'd gotten a look at the injury.

"Ah, then natural consequences have done part of my job for me," John said, tapping the wall so that he could get at the medical records. "It's possible to walk on some broken ankles, for the record, but doing so risks permanent nerve damage." His mouth twisted into a wry smile. "And a limp is a hell of a thing to develop in what's effectively a war zone. Name please?"

John pulled up the appropriate record and shrugged his shoulders, grabbing a stool and moving it over so that he could get a look at the damage. "Hard to say, Mr. Chesterton. I'll know more once I look it over and you answer a few questions." Though he was now likely looking at a man who wouldn't walk on a potentially-broken ankle unless it was an emergency.

"When you injured it, did you hear any kind of noise? Cracking, tearing, popping?"

Ever since his reappearance, Billy had been much more active around the ship. He traveled from department to department, updating his information banks and lending helping hands wherever he's allowed to.

Today his rounds brought him to Med Bay, where he was determined to help the people who were injured in battle. If he hadn't been caught and podded first, he would very likely be lying in bed here.

He waved to every person, searching for someone who looked bored out of their mind. That was an awful state to be in, after all. Something compelled to stop at this man's bed. He faintly recognized the person---a friend of someone he knew, maybe? He'd find out.

"Hey. How are you feeling?" The med bay was an awkward place to start a conversation, but that sentence had to be good for something.
morphitudinous: (Better without? Nah.)

The question caught Billy off guard. He'd never been mistaken for a doctor of all things! He chuckled, shaking his head.

"Not at all. I'm a mechanic---I suppose you could say I fix machines, not people. I'm just here to lend a hand wherever I can, because I've heard the staff was overwhelmed. Is there anything a non-expert can do for you at the moment?"
morphitudinous: (Seriously oozing)

[personal profile] morphitudinous 2012-06-10 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
"I can do that," Billy agreed, smiling lightly and taking a seat in the ward. "I almost always bring reading material, but you probably wouldn't be interested in mechanics and formulas. Should we start with introductions?"

He hoped he'd be forgiven his awkward nature. Meeting people wasn't second nature quite yet, especially not in a setting like this.

He'd have a few minutes at most before the Doctor sweeps in. He's rather good at appearing where either he's needed or it's generally just awkward, the Doctor nosing about medbay before zeroing in on Ian. He approaches his human while wringing his hands, eyes flicking from the bed to what looks ice on that ankle and then back to Ian.

"Had a bit of a fall?" The Doctor asks. He eyes the ice, rather like he's suspicious to how it's gotten there. After the battle with the Daligig, it isn't surprising to see medbay with more patients than usual, and given that, a twisted ankle is incredible all over again. "You look well," the Doctor adds, fumbling. "I assume you were probably running for your life."

Given how much practice Ian has had to rack up since that day in the junkyard, he expects the human to be better than the average human at it.

The Doctor tilted his head, frowning again at that ice. In fact, it looked twice as suspicious now as it did two seconds ago. He decided to try to pointedly ignore the ice for now, focusing on Ian. "Bored yet? Seems like it would be dull being stuck here."

"Clearly you didn't get away with it this time," the Doctor said, with the ghost of a wry smile. Ian seemed to be tolerating that suspicious ice pack, at the very least.

There are worst thing to see than your best friend on a hospital bed, but that didn't stop Barbara from worrying the moment she saw him. Of course, closer inspection revealed that it was nothing much at all. Especially if all he had was an ice pack. No casts, no straps or drips. Nothing serious.

"Don't tell me," she said as she perched on the edge of his bed, "you were rescuing damsels and twisted your ankle fighting the dragon that had hoarded them in high towers."

Barbara laughed gently so as not to disturb the other patients who actually needed rest. "Of all the things I imagined you doing, becoming a knight wasn't one of them."

"Why on Earth-?" She didn't remember that. "Was this in the life I'm yet to lead?"
